I just found out about this organization. It was founded to address
Quote:
the recent implementation of a policy requiring all foreign teachers to get yearly medical check-ups in order to qualify to have our work permits
.
Information and membership is located at

Is this a joke site? But she seems serious.

Confronting this level of discrimination has made us realize that, no matter how much we contribute on the job, as foreigners we are simply not as secure in our jobs as are our Taiwanese colleagues.

No....really? Welcome to Taiwan, Dr. Silvio. Except that the locals are not very secure either, and foreigners get cut a lot of slack here.

Yes, this is completely serious. I signed the petition, but in a sense, it's naive. As I posted on Taipei Kid, most of the problems that they talk about are problems only for those working at national schools. I already hold administrative positions at my school and my boss is a White American. The Chair of the English Department has been a foreigner, as have Chairs at Fuda and Tunghai (and I am sure other schools). I can also say for a fact that foreign teachers receive money through the Private University Teacher's Pension Plan. It's not an impressive amount of money, but except for the physical, where I teach, all things being equal, it's the same for me as it is for the local professors.

How recent was the health check requirement implemented? I didn't know it was a brand new rule. But I've only been here about 2 years. Does the site say the year the rule was set up? Just curious.

Until this year, foreigners teaching as faculty at a university did not need a health check to obtain a visa.

best wishes in helping taiwan along.

do you have any fear for having signed the petition? as you know, it is illegal for foreigners to be politically active in taiwan.

keep fighting the good fight.

The link is active,
http://english.ncu.edu.tw/news/040601/index.htm
It doesn't appear that much has been happening. Virtually everyone who has joined their group is Taiwanese, and not a single response or comment has been posted on their bulletin board.

Does anyone know something that I don't?

What exactly is their platform outside of not having to take a health exam every year.
Nice website but it needs a little more color and substance.
Good luck,
A.
