No direct-hire, native-speaking English teacher is likely to see a job offer of 8000 SAR because it's the base salary---the starting point government universities use for calculating actual salary. That is, it increases by X amount for each year of the job candidate's verified, previous experience. (However, again, the number of years of calculable experience is capped.) Once all the calculations are made, the final job offer is presented in writing to the candidate.

Thanks NS. Iit's clearer now, although the base salary would still need to be augmented by about 40% to be competitive, even for hiring the inexperienced, it seems to me. |

| Except the inexperienced aren't always likely to get on as a direct-hire. Plus, I'm sure there are other factors that add to that base salary, such as being a native speaker. |

on top of the base was a "discretionary allowance" of 2700 riyals, which might be the native-speaker bonus you mention. i asked what this was for, and was never answered. then an "experience allowance" of 1200, a living allowance of same, and 600 riyals transport.
another curiosity i recall was the interviewer being keenly interested in my DELTA and questioning me about it at length, even stating it made me a good candidate. yet, the salary offer did not appear to credit me for that.
then there was being asked for my CV by email 3 times over the course of a week, by the same person, after already uploading everything to their website and filling out their own separate application. just seemed bushleague. |

Sadly, this all sounds rather typical of the Gulf.

| The offer isn't surprising tbh, especially if you have a BA. These places follow a strict pay structure. They have one for BA candidates and another for MA candidates. |

| Sheikt, feel free to send your offer my way- LOL. I applied to PSU on April 3, and haven't heard back from them yet. I'm hoping they're just busy. Can I ask, did you attend an in-person interview at all, or did you just speak over the phone? |

| i heard back from them within a week. i had an phone interview, and at the end was offered a position [though the interviewer said this was not typical practice]. frankly, i was insulted by their offer, as i now have a direct hire job paying nearly double what they did. if you are qualified you can have a much nicer life in asia for 44k. |

i understand that references are not the same, yet references are specifically what they asked of me--not letters. the day "referee contact details" means "certified employment letters" is the day i cease to understand my native tongue. it would have been very easy to confirm, to boot, as i spent 6 years in one place, with a boss who speaks english. i must've been crazy to think it was HR's job to check references, hahaha.
the Kingdom is where my new job is, and i've done a great deal of research on it, so whether it is my cup of tea or not remains to be seen. i've traveled extensively in the middle east --the "lifestyle" is not the issue. i simply expect to be compensated commensurate with the sacrifices inherent in said "lifestyle". otherwise, it isn't worth it.
perhaps you are right that keeping expectations low is best, yet i kept them high, and had them met--taking dream to reality. what i did not do was settle for the first offer i got, even though it was direct-hire, suspecting, and shrewdly so, that I could do better. and even without an MA, huzzah! |
You've traveled to countries in the Mid- East that allow visitors visas. But have you ever set foot into Saudi Arabia? If not then we will see if it is you cup of tea or not. Saudi Arabia is not the Middle East! I've been to Turkey, Bahrain, Emirates, Oman, and Jordan, and I can say it is not like Saudi Arabia at all. But until you actually and legally set foot in Saudi Arabia then you qualify for Mid-East experience. I think I speak for more than myself here.
Anyhoo. Good Luck in your new career in Saudi Arabia. Don't eat the Camel meat! And stay away from coughing students that have fever and shortness of breath. You know, corona-virus.
So let it be written, so let it be done.

ps I think I know that guy at PSU. did he do a skype interview? It's a small world, once you get over here you will realize this.

| ChloeJoe...did they send you a receipt of your application? If not, I would strongly suggest that you e-mail them to see if they have received your application. |

| Nope never did. I tried to follow-up as well, and my original email and packet were organized and professional-looking. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the heads up about your experience. |

Keep in mind your lack of post-MA teaching experience may be why they're not responding. That was a concern of yours. |

| Thanks Sheikit, I'm sure I received the same offer (almost) from PSU. Can I ask where you found the second direct hire position? |
