Right now I have a CELTA. The logical step would be to try and get a DELTA at some point in the next few years or so.

I am wondering what additional opportunities and financial benefits a DELTA would get me. What jobs could I get with a DELTA that I couldn't get without it?

What is it you're interested in doing in terms of moving up in this field?

I don't want to teach forever. I like the field and I know that I am a good teacher, but teaching kids can wear on me at times. Some classes are good, but others are just incredibly difficult to deal with especially when summer is coming. I can't imagine myself being satisfied if I have the same job 10 years from now making the same money a rookie with a CELTA makes. I want to keep moving forward rather than being content with what I have now.

Without any other qualifications, I'm stuck at that position. Ideally, I'd like to move onto either being a teacher trainer or perhaps more on the theoretical aspects of education rather than practical. I guess the latter would be more of an MA/MEd type thing though. Now it won't happen this year or even next year. I'm talking at least a few years down the road as I'd like to get some experience before making such a leap.

DELTA (3-6 months):
- Language academy head of program, director of studies, teacher trainer, head teacher, etc.
- Can also lead to examiner (Cambridge suite of ESOL exams) but is NOT necessary (can become an examiner without it).

(Typically not a lot of extra pay - still only about 1 step above entry level EFL)

Options beyond the DELTA:

PGCE / DipEd (1 year):
- Can lead to licensure (in your own or in another country) as a teacher and mainstream teaching work (good deal for anyone outside the US - it sucks to be a teacher in the US right now).
- Better international schools have some pretty decent packages both in EFL and teaching other subjects.

M.Ed/MA.TESOL (typically 2 years)
- Program head, director of studies, tertiary positions (lecturer, adjunct professor, etc), teacher trainer, field research, theoretical research.
- Can lead to Ed.D or PhD if you want to move further into admin roles (private or mainstream).

.

Having a DELTA can also open doors in the textbook market. I know two DELTA holders who were approached by well known EFL book publishing companies and asked to write books for the SE Asian and world wide General English markets.
