I recently got a background check done by a local company, it only took a couple hours and cost me $20. They do a local (state) search, a "supersearch" which covers a lot of states (or maybe even all of the states for things like felonies) and a nationwide sex offender search. It looks nice and official.

I'm not sure where you can find these companies but I was first introduced to the company by a local public school district who uses them for background checks. Long story short, call your local school district, ask if they have a volunteer coordinator, and tell them you want to volunteer. You can say you want to tutor kids after-school, help out during study halls, whatever, give back to the community. If they accept volunteers then very soon in the process they will probably ask you to complete a criminal background check. I did this once and I got a copy of the check for free, from the same company that later did the check for $20. So, follow this route and I'll bet you can get some good info on yourself, not to mention a nice official-looking document. If you're talking about a misdemeanor from another state, it's likely that it won't even show up on the supersearch, then you have an official-looking document that states you have passed a "supersearch" and that your name has been checked in the nationwide sex offender registry. Not bad for free, or $20.

Good luck.

Is this standard do any companies pay for your flight to China?

Never, at least not on the first contract with a school. I've had my flight in and out reimbursed, and I've had the school pay for my flight home for the summer and pay for the return flight.
