I have been offered a teaching position at KAU-ELI for the coming academic year. And am interested in finding out more, about what kind of place I'm going to. There have been several threads on this forum addressing the Academic environment in Saudi universities in general. But I have read (almost) nothing about the academic environment at KAU-ELI.

Is there anybody who knows if it is typical of the rest of saudi unis? Is it better or worse for some reason? Are students more motivated or less? Is management more responsive to legitimate teacher concerns or less? Is wasta a bigger factor or smaller?

I have heard that the academic culture in Saudi higher-ed settings is nothing to write home about. But KAU has recently been ranked the top university in the mideast (or was it just the gulf or even just Saudi?). Anyway I'm hoping KAU-ELI will be a tad better place to work at. But if it isn't I'd still like to know.

I'm interested in anything and everything about the ELI and KAU. Any anecdote, generalization, insider tips, gossip - anything at all that has not been mentioned already in these forums will be highly appreciated. (I've already read everything mentioned about KAU and ELI in these forums so far).

I'm interested mostly in the students' performance, but also about faculty co-operating and working together in order to teach more effectively, and management interest in helping students and teachers achieve goals. (Not necessarily limited to these topics though).

Thanks in advance all!

KAU is not a top university in the Middle East neither in the Magic Kingdom.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2012/13, the five top universities in the Middle East are the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), King Saud University and King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (Saudi Arabia), Tel Aviv University and Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (Israel).

In the majority of the Magic kingdom's universities, there is a culture of 'tribalism' amongst the expat community.

Thanks Nomad Sould. I have been going through their curriculum videos and reading their faculty handbook.

I have been at KAU for over four years. You can send me a PM if you would like to ask specific questions about the ELI.
