Another strange thing is that other teachers have not been asked or have just been told that their contract is not going to get renewed when they asked the FAO.

I'm actually curious about how often this happens. It seems clear that people around here think that having a native-English pulse and a forged diploma is sufficient qualifications for lots of jobs, that lots of universities have trouble with recruitment. The low standards likely result in a lot of deadbeats getting hired, but I suppose they also mean that a deadbeat is reasonably likely to keep a job, unless he or she is blatantly incompetent in whatever way. How often do teachers actually get fired or at least not receive new contract offers at universities?

Rarely. Even if they are incompetent. I've only ever known one person not to have a contract renewed, and they had a mental breakdown, stopped taking medication, ran naked round the campus, then later tried to push another FT off a balcony.

It all depends on the standards of the university. Some do take great care in recruitment and what their teachers do. Whereas others are satisfied with a body in the room.

Great comedy Shroob but alas I believe it after some of my own experiences at uni's in China.

I think that it's great for a school to give you an opportunity to sell yourself to them again. I would totally take advantage of the situation and show them other job offers. (Specific concrete offers) You don't always get a chance to come in and plead your case for a raise. If you were good, ask for a raise. If you were mediocre, ask what you can do to improve. (If you want to stay)

I have has a raise every single year that I have been in China. I have never settled for the same deal from one year to the next. Prove your worth and get paid......complain and get tossed. Face time with the boss is valuable to me.

Again, see this as an opportunity rather than a punishment.

This.

An update. I replied Sunday night after receiving her text....

"Thanks for the message. I hope you had a nice weekend. Actually I have received a job offer from ____ University next semester so I will change to that school. What is the interview? Is it important?"

Her response...

"If you have decided not to teach in our college you need not to come."

Saw her the next day and all was cool. She congratulated me on the new job / better pay, random conversation about weekend, upcoming days off etc.

Later that (Monday) evening another text message came through, I guess just CC'd to all foreign teachers in the department....

"I'm sorry to tell you that the interview has been canceled because of some changes in our programe. Next term we will not hire foreign teachers. Our cooperation is so happy and thank you for all that you have done"

Spoke on the phone to a couple of the other teachers who had assumed they were going to stay who were absolutely livid at the idea of essentially being fired via text message. For myself I kind of get that rat fleeing the sinking ship feeling that I dodged a big ole' pile of crap.

Maybe the English language program was euthanized at the horrible thought of trying to run it sans the Toast-Meister next semester!

The guys are my school were lucky to get 6 or 7 weeks notice to find new gigs and have RP extensions organized. I've seen similar happen to teachers with only a few days warning.

Moral of the story I guess is there's never a whole lot of security with these kinds of jobs in China. Most of us are just one budget cutting meeting or a menstrual DOS' 3 second long decision making process away from unemployment.

Always have a alternate options in Asia. These days I don't even put on my shoes without having a Plan B.

I kid you not a couple of years ago I inherited a kid with the English name "Boner". I thought it was awesome, but one of the grown-ups changed it to "Abraham" haha.

aha! so the original text message was a cry for help!

some of the higher-ups wanted to axe the program, maybe because
the results had been so poorly. the engrish department was hoping
the foreign teachers could save the day by providing some justification
for continuing the program.

all's well that ends on the other hand as we all known.

Good luck with your next job, Toast. Management there obviously don't know their behinds from their elbows. At least teachers didn't have to go through the sit-up-and-beg-for-your-job routine after all, as that would have proved to have been a total debacle.

Try the bible...for Abe Lincoln they're more words to aptly describe what he meant to people at the time....

Yeah, those guys have to jump out of the plane now, but at least they get a parachute. Hopefully it will be a fully functioning one.

GERONIMOOOOOOOOOOO!

If the college won't hire FTs next term, that decision was made a year ago--- at least. The local FAO can't make that decision. My guess is that the FAO/DOS had a hissy fit and is bluffing. I'd advise colleagues not to respond to any phone calls or text messages. That should produce sufficient discomfort for her.

I won't work for any college or university whose FAO is under forty-five years old. I turned down a position this year because the FAO was a twenty-seven year-old bimbo. Never again.

In a drudge job like fast food or something, it's pretty clear that you can't really "unleash creativity" so you have to rule through fear.

Oh yeah? Well explain this:

Pizza Hut 'embarrassed' over peeing video

Bruce Horovitz, USA TODAY 5:10 p.m. EST February 19, 2014

Here's an extra special ingredient that no one wants on their pizza: pee.

But one Pizza Hut in Kermit, West Va., seems to have come a bit too close to almost serving up a taste of that.

Red-faced Pizza Hut officials are fumbling to explain the video of a Pizza Hut district manager — make that, former district manager — who local TV station WOWK-TV caught urinating in the very same sink that the store also uses to wash utensils.

And, no, the manager was not removing an extra-tough stain. In the video, the former manager actually undoes his pants and relieves himself.

"First of all, we are embarrassed by the actions of this individual," says Pizza Hut, in a statement. "Pizza Hut has zero tolerance for violations of our operating standards, and the local owner of the restaurant took immediate action and terminated the employee involved."

The incident, which occurred during non-business hours, did not include any food tampering, says Pizza Hut in its statement. "We follow strict safety and handling procedures and the restaurant has since been closed. We apologize to our customers of Kermit, West Virginia, and those in our system who have been let down by this situation."

To be sure, fast-food employees doing gross things at work is hardly unique to Pizza Hut. Back in 2009, a video went viral of a Domino's employee picking his nose and placing his findings in the food he's making. Last year, a video also went viral of a Taco Bell employee licking a long stack of taco shells. That was quickly followed by a viral image of a Wendy's employee drinking directly out of a Frosty machine. Is this silly-but-sick stuff contagious in the fast-food world?"

No, says public relations guru Peter Himler. "It may be that local media tends to gravitate to this kind of sensationalistic story involving big-named fast food establishments," he says. Even then, he adds, Pizza Hut needs "to make a forceful case that this is an isolated incident that does not reflect on the company's culture or workplace procedures."

The store was closed on Tuesday and will not reopen until it has been completely sanitized and received a clean bill of health from the health department, says spokesman Doug Terfehr.

But like all of the other fast-food incidents, this one, too, will quickly fade, says Himler. "I doubt this will have a long-term negative affect on Pizza Hut's reputation," he says. "Blaring headlines today usually fade quickly into the rear view mirror by tomorrow."

Meanwhile, some folks in Kermit have to be wondering, the next time they order from the local Pizza Hut, do they have to remind whoever answers to phone to, well, hold the pee?
