Why? Maybe one for the mods or Dave himself.

At the bottom of the forums page it says:

'Most users ever online was 1545 on Sun Oct 03, 2010 2:59 am'

Why were so many online at that particular moment in time? Usually it seems to be between 60-80.

Puzzled...

I don't remember the exact year/month/date, but I do recall one occasions where the whole site had a big hiccup and lost all data for months backwards. A couple of days (can't remember time period, but long enough for some of us to experience withdrawal symptoms) later, all the data returned.

I wonder if that return was the source of the very high users online (they weren't really all online, but all their posts came back at one time).

Just a theory. I'm clearly not a mod:-)
Would be interested to know the real answer, though!

Maybe part of that number is people like me. I am logged in pretty much permanently. I mean I only occasionally browse these pages for twenty to forty minutes, but I am logged in all the time. Does it count if we are logged in, but offline?

Don't think so because normally the stats are only showing 70ish people at any one time.

Nope. Currently, it says:

In total there are 90 users online :: 10 Registered, 3 Hidden and 77 Guests

If the total number included people who were logged in permanently, those people would be listed under "Registered" users. Most of the total is Guests.

My guess is that on Oct 03, 2010, someone on a bigger forum or web site somewhere linked to something on this forum, and lots of people followed that link here.

I still think the cataclysmic event of time shifting (many months of total posts lost for a day - half day (?), then returned) that I recall may well have occurred in October, and could have been in 2010.

My research into it has not been able to produce much except for some possible explanations, but it does not appear anyone is 100% certain of his or her theory or conjecture.

I am not surprised, the number 1545 is nothing compared to 532,396 !
