Want to see if anyone has any recent information on filing for a one month tourist visa based upon a current residence permit? My RP expires June 30, and the school is going to help me file for a one month tourist visa. Does anyone know if the tourist visa is likely to expire July 30, or 1 month from the date on which we give the visa to the PSB (i.e. expiration date of July 23).
Additionally, as my plane ticket back to the US isn't until August 15th, I'm hoping to extend the visa by one more month. Anyone know if this is possible, and if so if it can be done in country (I know that tourist visas issued in the states can often be extended for a month locally) , or if I'll need to go to HK or Mongolia to get this done?
Thanks for any and all help! |

I, and I'm sure a few dozen/hundred people are in the same boat as you. I'll go to the entry-exit shop on the 23rd. They will extend it until the 22/23rd of July, provided you (I) have a good record of registering promptly on arrival in the past.
As for extending it again - who knows..? |

Shouldn't your current school extend the residence permit if you have resigned with them? If you're moving to a new school then that school should apply for a new residence permit before the current one expires.
A school asking you to wait around on a tourist visa doesn't sound like a school worth working for. |

Neither one of those posters mentioned signing another contract with their school. |

So I'm now done at my school, residence permit expires on Aug. 26th, but my brother is getting married in Jiangsu in early Sept. As I was only teaching one semester and won't be returning in the fall, it seems a stretch that my (former) school will go through the hassle or pay for a conversion. Do I need to go through the school to change the RP into an L-visa? And do I need to do it in my province of residence/work rather than, say, Yunnan? Anybody have experience with this? |

You, all by yourself, can present the necessary documents at the Entry-Exit Bureau to change your RP to a tourist visa. As far as I remember the two vital ingredients are 1) the paperwork and 2) your physical presence when presenting the paperwork. Of course your current school will need to be helpful by giving you your release/recommendation letter and certificate of FEC cancellation.
I do not know if it must be the same province. To me it seems logical/more straightforward to apply for the L in the same province your RP was issued, unless you will be travelling or moving as soon as school finishes. Even if you are travelling around China you could apply for the visa and then travel using the receipt as your ID. Later you can return to pick up your visa/passport or ask someone to pick it up and mail it to you - though in that latter case you would need to mail the receipt to that someone. |

In Beijing they said the RP could NOT be changed to a tourist visa, and I cut it too close to try it in the province where it was issued. Luckily my flight was within the allowed time to get a ting liu extension of a little over ten days. Unfortunately it took a full week to process the thing, but there are worse places to get stuck than Beijing! |
