did a search here, didn't see many results even though i've seen this topic b4.

a known recruiting agency wants me to give my passport #. per the wisdom of ppl here, i blur out that info.

the recuiter is legit. they said they need it to give to the schools.

i apply to hr and fao at schools directly. same docs. so far, none have yet asked for unblurred docs with # on it.

i'm told that passport # and dates of expiration can be used for i.d. theft like importing cars or writing things about u in ur file?

this particular agency asking is legit, got some school contacts. my first reaction is dont give it. im shopping around for the right fit, right school. they might have connections that u cant get by directly applying.

this s a question i hope bud powell answers (among others) bcz he often knows. the agency is one he has recommended.

In the job hunt phase you can send a scan of your passport with some vital info blurred out, but once you accept a job the employer needs a scan with all the info. Otherwise they can't apply for your work permit, etc.

thanks, alien abductee.

the recruiting agency is asking for it before they contact the schools.

i am ok if an fao asks. they need it. but the recruiter? mmmm makes me uncomfortable. they dont need it , and a fao wont ask until you pass the interview and reach agreement.

how should i respond to the agency?

The school is the employer and will need everything when they apply for your residence and typically you will already be on campus by then. There is no need to give a clear version to a recruiter. It will not be a make or break in terms of getting a job offer.
Ensure the passport you send scanned is the one you intend to enter China on.
If you need to renew, do so before you send even a blanked out version to recruiter or school.
Your FAO will try to do the form filling before breaking for summer and if you turn up on a different passport it can cause problems.

The recruiter won't consider you if the expiration date is blurred out. Blurring the expiration date obscures a vital piece of vital information about you: that you can travel and are ready to travel.

So, a recruiter could serve as a pretty fancy database.

I sincerely appreciate all the info from everyone. Just want make a point to say sorry, Bud. A topic on another thread touched on a logical point of vulnerability. My emotions got the best of me, and I projected some intense energy onto several people. I've apologized in pm even though no real damage was done. I prefer to keep it respectful, not take things too seriously.

Thanks for your reply about the blur. Someone once said it is best to blur the dates too because it can be used improperly if in the wrong hands. Be it recruiter or shady character working in the school etc etc. The agency didn't ask for the dates. They want the # (probably forgot to ask for dates).

It isn't necessary for them to have. Would you give it to an agency that you regard as trustworhty?

This is my experience: I always block out my PP number when I apply for a job. The school always asks for a clear copy when it applies for a letter of invitation.

Once, the FAO failed to check my scan and sent the blurred copy that I gave the recruiter to the Ministry of Education (or whoever issues the letter of invitation).

TWO WEEKS after the FAO sent out the blurred copy, I got an email from the recruiter requesting a clear copy. The FAO couldn't get the letter without the PP number.

If a school enlists the help of a recruiter, the recruiter does indeed need your PP number. Schools that use recruiters do so for many reasons, the two most important of which are: the FAO's/employer's English is not adequate 2. The FAO/employer would rather not get involved with the FT any sooner than it needs to.

In a nutshell: at some point your recruiter will need your passport number unless you are handed off to the FAO/employer right after you are accepted. (That doesn't happen often).

I sent scanned docs to a recruiter last week. Later that day, I found him on a "shame list" on another website. The link to his name was broken, and I couldn't find any other negatives. Where there is smoke; there is fire. They used to put our SSN on our Teaching Certificates in Arizona....I use a 100% free service called www.creditkarma.com to closely monitor my credit.
No credit card needed....gives you your Transunion score for free. Might work for Canadians, but not sure about others.

I gave into a smooth talking recruiter named Michelle and just got my ass deported two weeks ago for doing so. Follow the LAW and not the agent!

I gave into a smooth talking recruiter named Michelle Wang (Beijing) and just got my ass deported two weeks ago for doing so. Follow the LAW and not the agent!

Also be sure to avoid a recruiter who goes by the name of "Michelle Wang" whose real name is Zhang Mei Li
