I have been interested in teaching in China for some time now. I have applied to many different organizations and have gotten a number of responses. Can anyone recommend a good region/city/area to teach? Here is what I am considering:
1) People and culture- want something out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
2) Geography- would love beautiful scenery- hills, rivers, green lush land
3) Cost of living- not too high, IE. Shanghai
4) Language- Mandarin
I know all of this sounds idealistic, but I have never been to China before. I really do not know much about where to go, so ANY information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks )

Nicolas, do you like cold weather? If so, the Northeast may provide a good choice, such as Liaoning, Jilin, or Heilongjiang Provinces. I successfully avoided seeing the movie you mention, so cannot comment on that aspect. Although not the lingua franca everywhere, most educated people do speak Mandarin. And as China continues to develop, people from different regions rely upon Mandarin to do business. An MBA student from Shanghai who I tutor told me he believes regional differences in language may someday disappear. Hard to visualize now. |
