Has anyone had any experience taking a trip out of China to organise an F-Visa or Tourist visa, that hasn't had to do it through Hong Kong?
Converting my FEC and Residency permit from one province to the next has proved to be a mess, and I'm going to need something to cover me in the one month interim.
Has anyone ever arranged this through, say, Hanoi? Or Ulumbataar? |

Getting a one month tourist visa after your residence permit expires shouldn't be a problem. |

You shouldn't have a problem getting your RP changed to a tourist visa in the city in which you are working. The problem MAY come into play when you try to change that tourist visa to an RP to work for another school. |

Doesn't an F require a sponsor?
I might have to do the same thing (renew a tourist L visa) and my nearest Chinese consulate outside Mainland is HK.
Why Hanoi OP? |

A trip to Hanoi for British or American citizens will require a Vietnam visa, which will require a trip to your nearest Vietnamese embassy or consulate. Hanoi's a nice, but busy and dirty city. I wouldn't personally bother going there just to get a tourist visa to come back into China. Have you considered a brief trip to the Philippines? You can get cheap flights from Macau. |

It is a problem, this case is an exception due to some silly differences in provinces. |

It does, though sponsorship isn't the issue. Although everything will be paid for, I don't want to spend my time in a city I have no interest in. I've never been to Vietnam, so if I have to sit on my back-side for 4 days, it provides the time for some interesting side trips. |

The Philippines is incredible, though it wouldn't be fair to my wife if I took a vacation there without her. |

Ask the PSB what to do. There should be a recourse for this situation. I don't know where you are, but in Shanghai, you can show the FEC paperwork to the PSB, and they will give you a temporary stay permit. If you need more time, you can apply for it, but you need to show that your FEC is in fact on its way. There shouldn't be any need to leave the country. |
