When we mention about dogs as dirty animals according to the religious pout of view, I think these people think touching the dog's saliva would invalidate their ablution. As we know, dos go around the house, kissing, sniffing things and the saliva would make the place impure for them to pray. Some times, they are concerned that they would not even know if the saliva touches the sofa and then, their attire they are wearing. One thing what impresses me most is the Saudi guys and their white gowns that they can wear all day long and we can't even see a dirty spot, always crisp and clean. This is one of the reasons they always ( secretly) think others are unclean as I can assure you that no one can wear a white dress all day long from neck to ankle and stay afresh and clean. People who own farms do keep dogs as pets or for protection.

In Riyadh, there are stray cats in every neighborhood, around construction sites, etc. Stray dogs in Riyadh? I am sure these dogs belonged to someone. http://www.emirates247.com/news/region/9-dogs-burned-alive-for-attacking-saudi-kids-2014-07-20-1.557091

Better stay well away from houses with small children living in them, then.
Normal dogs do not walk around drooling, but I've seen any number of small kids who do just that - and far worse!

There used to be packs of stray dogs that wandered around Jeddah - but that was back in the early 80s.

I think the municipality eradicated them all by various means, including poison.

Regards,
John

There are wadi dogs in Oman, but they seem to disappear too.

Dear MuscatGary,

Any Asian restaurants in the vicinity?

Regards,

No John... Laughing it is the ROP who shoots or poisons them, but there are always more to take their place.

Some of my students also say that they enjoy shooting dogs at night. Guns are easy to get hold of here so probably true...

As all human beings inhabiting inside Saudi Arabia, I guess animals also need mehran ( legal guardian), so that they would be safe and sound inside the warmth of the home, away from shooters and abusers.

Imagine living under the sponsorship/guardianship of one's employer/sponsor, even s/he is 55 with 5 kids and 3 grandkids, male of female, American or Indian, I am surprised that we live (d) under equal rights inside Magic Kingdom. No one can do anything without the permission/approval from the guardian. That is one of the hardest things for me to come to terms with.
haha, I meant "point", but am glad that I made you amused.

This is for FLADUDE:

Have you checked out websites with KSA's pet transport regs? Several breeds are banned, even if a mix with that breed. I know that Pit Bulls and Rottweilers or any mix thereof are definitely banned from UAE and some other ME countries. Also, if you are flying a US airline to KSA, I shudder to think what will happen to your pet b/c those "pet handlers" are not trained and could care less; it's just a stratagem to charge you the outrageous "cargo" status instead of much cheaper "checked baggage" or "carry on," the latter of which would not be possible for your large dog. Cargo is a precarious way to transport a pet, believe me. I made it a point when I returned to the US from ME with two rescued semi-feral cats that I used Lufthansa, a very pet friendly airline that allows one to transport pets as "excess baggage." Cargo would've been $4,000 but via "excess baggage" the charge last summer was only $250 for 2 cats. Check out this website:
http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/SaudiArabia.cfm

I agree with others here who recommend that you leave your beloved pet at home. PS Yes, in UAE also, the young local men enjoyed trying to hit dogs with rocks and their speeding vehicles (as they did to the poor homeless, feral donkeys). Poison was the preferred form of pet population control. Good luck and be fully informed.

P.S. FLADUDE: I forgot to mention one important point about transporting pets on airlines -- some folks may not know this but regardless of the shipping status (cargo or excess baggage), all animals are placed in the same holding area which has climate control but the difference, of course, is in the price incurred by the pet owner. And then there are the worst airlines with hundreds of lawsuits against them for negligence.

Also, a colleague hired a dog sitter while on summer vacation. The sitter dutifully walked the dog several times daily around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the dog expired mysteriously, but subsequent vet autopsy revealed poisoning which is a slow, painful death with severe abdominal paroxysms over a few days. Not to sensationalize but you can imagine how that family suffered. Hope you can find a foster parent for your pooch.

FYI: This old thread was resurrected; Fladude hasn't posted on this forum since Feb. 2013. But the info is certainly useful for others considering bringing a dog.

Dear NS,
Apologies for overlooking the date of that post. Yes, the regs change every year and the crate requirements differ drastically from one airline to the next. That's why I made it a point to stay with the same airline home, even if it meant renting a car the rest of the way. Thank you for pointing that out. As someone mentioned elsewhere also, more and more landlords these days do not allow pets.
A friend of mine who teaches public school in Dubai was called to the office and told parents did not want her touching their children since she worked with the local animal shelter (touching dogs)!
Regards, PS
