Hello,
Has anyone ever dealt with Gold Star Teachers recruiting agency? Does anyone recommend for or against this outfit? Thanks for any heads-up info.

More than just another recruiter, seems Disney, Wall St, and perhaps a few others outsource their entire HR to them. |

Taking 35% of someone's pay check after they pay 15-20% in taxes sounds pretty greedy to me too. |

Hello. I'm Director of Recruitment here at Gold Star TEFL Recruitment. This thread just came up on a Google search and I was shocked to read the post by 'Harbin' claiming that we charge a fee of 35%.
This is just simply not true, we do not charge teachers any fee at all for our recruitment services and do not take anything from the teachers pay. Never have and we never will.
We get a fee from the schools once the teacher has completed their probation period which is how we are able to offer a completely free service for teachers. I can only assume 'Harbin' is working for a competitor and his comments are an attempt to discredit us.
I recently wrote a blog article on the pros and cons of using a recruitment agent to find an ESL job, which goes into more detail - http://goldstarteachers.com/using-recruiter-find-esl-jobs-good-bad/.
We also have dozens of in depth written testimonials with some of our current teachers and some video interviews too on our website. |

It's good to see someone from a recruiting agency or school actually come on here, comment, and add some balance to the discussion here. Thanks.
BTW, I was doing a search recently for China FAQs and your site came up near the top. Quite helpful. |

I'm in support of any entity defending itself, but promotion (citing testimonial) isn't a balance in my view.
Here's a typo on the linked page: There loads of bad schools out there
Thought I'd help...
As a prospector in a gold rush may realize, there's more money selling picks and shovels than actually panning, and the business of teaching is a limited topic to typically end with qualifying a margin. But as AA notes, misinformation is worse than no information.
Yet, how many teachers are curious to know? A commission is based on a salary offer, generally? For all the adspeak on the linked website about the quality of employer, what does Goldstar express to its clients about the quality of their teachers? The linked website is a world of hedgy, cheerful prose and barely informational. |

Not true, they charge a flat fee to the school, I'll dig up their info and see if I can post it on an image hosting site tonight.
Edit: Should have finished reading the thread before posting, nevermind! |

I think there may be a play on words going on here. While it is true that Gold Star does not charge any fee to the teacher, they are indeed taking a chunk of money from the teachers "allocation" from the employer. So if you applied directly to XYZ School you might get a monthly salary of 18,000 yuan, whereas if you went through Gold Star, or just about any agency your pay would 12,000 (more or less) and you would never be told that it could have been 18,000 if you had applied directly due to non-disclosure agreements agents and recruiters sign with employers.
If Gold Star would like to rebut, I am all ears. |

No play on words, just a lack of basic common sense on your part.
They charge a flat fee of around $1000, which would be approx 6,000RMB per teacher for only the first year (if the teacher resigns then they are not involved and get no extra cash).
If your school is taking 60,000RMB from your pay to pay off a 6,000RMB one time payment, then your school is scamming you, not a recruiter.
Your dead wrong about this one Buckeye.
There is no non-disclosure agreement, I'm looking for a copy of their contract right now, give me a couple minutes and I'll figure out how to post it.
All your doing now is posting hyperbole and lies, you need to cut it out before you get banned. |

And here you go:
This is the teacher requirement form they ask you to fill out so they can better advertise and find teachers for your school:
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/kPdkv6X88P/
And here is their contract which includes pricing information:
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/xxbiVbnn8/
Now Buck, if I believed you to have any shred of decency I would expect you to admit your wrong and apologies to Gold Star for slandering them and providing mis-information that you pulled out of your rear.
We're waiting, got it? |

Hey Kong, if I am wrong I am not above apologizing, but I cannot open the file you posted. Do you have a direct link that you can post here? Btw... I don't know of any agency that works for free if that is what you are suggesting? Also if what you posted is the contract with the foreign teacher, that would not prove anything. What we really need to see is the contract Gold Star signed with the school employer. Do you have a copy of that contract by any chance? If not maybe the guy from Gold Star can post here so I can read and apologize if necessary?
I would also point out that most all of the recruiters except the worst of the worst don't directly charge a fee to the teacher, but if the money was originally earmarked to be paid to the teacher as part of his salary (had the teacher applied directly) the teacher is still indirectly paying the recruiter through the school who makes a direct payment and adjusts the salary of the teacher. I hope I said this in a way that is understood?
I will try another way of saying it... Let's say you come to XYZ school directly and offer you a job at 18,000 yuan a month. While you are thinking about it Teacher John Doe applies through a recruiter but now the offer he receives is 15,000 yuan a month and the extra 36,000 yuan is paid to the recruiter (most of whom give half of it back to the principal under the table). I met principal from a XiCheng primary school three years ago who want me to be her recruiter so she could do this very thing and make a few bucks to supplement her paltry salary. I also found this old article that talks about this scheme as well.

If Gold Star is different, I would be shocked. But without seeing the contract they have with the school we would never know.

I don't believe you, the site works fine for me, you must be using the kind of internet where it doesn't want to open things you don't want to see.
How about try turning on your VPN, and please don't pretend like you don't have on because otherwise you wouldn't be able to view all those CFTU links you keep posting.
Your inability to read is troubling and I'm starting to suspect your just playing dumb because I refuse to believe someone could be so stupid as to mis-read as much as you do.
I very stated what both documents I posted are, why would a contract between Gold Star and a teacher (which doesn't exist) include pricing information meant for a school?
You are wrong, apologize and stop pulling facts out of your rear.
Got it?
We're waiting...[/b] |
