Thanks for the details, and for the reproof. I thought the other commenter was insinuating there was some sort of issue specific to the classroom or schools to be aware of in China, such as unfair accountability standards or a tendency for a negative vibe to exist between teacher and coworkers/admin, something I may have missed in other threads.
I don't really see the need for the derisive speech and demoralization. Yes, I am a newbie. But it was my impression we were for the most part college graduates and could function in a collegial atmosphere on here. Instead, I feel like I'm being jeered at on an elementary school playground.
But thanks for those items that were delineated anyway- |

Also posters who recoil from the possibility of teaching in a British or other system that isn't their native one, should really reconsider whether any activity outside the US is for them. |
Sorry, I should have explained myself better. I recoil from the possibility of teaching in a system that promotes rote learning of an unnecessarily broad and exceedingly shallow curriculum, communicated in language that is imprecise to the point of being deliberately ambiguous.
There ya go. |

Is the culture shock really that big? I barely felt it. Maybe 10 years ago I would have, but just guessing at that one. With google maps, google translator, and a vpn on my phone I could get around with barely any Chinese. With a good vpn it's no problem accessing American websites, getting tv shows, or whatever. You can order almost any western item off taobao.
Maybe i'm an odd one. I remember walking down a sidewalk with some of my students. Heard honking behind us and some guy in an suv driving on the sidewalk was wanting us to get out of the way. I cracked up because it was so funny and wished I had my camera.. The students didn't understand why the situation was funny. Oh chinese drivers.... Huangdao has great bus and bike lanes though so always feel safe on my scooter... Not like riding one in ko phangan or ko tao in Thailand this summer. Evil roads on those islands. |
