oh those callers for prayers,
the worst must I say is the morning ones..
First, he ( Muezin/Imam) would call out around 3:45 am or 4:30 am, depending on their scheduled timing. When it was over, you would be thankful.
But, it is not over, another second/calling after 10 min, OH NOOOO.. then another 10 mins later, he would start praying on loud speaker for a good 5-10 minutes.
Altogether for 30 mins with intervals, and every block of the road/city, there are 2-3 Mosques, but the callers would call out for prayers( adhan) one after another, not at the same time..
Some prayer leaders have a bearable voice, some, oh my God, so piercing.
Those mosque Imams/sheiks have to go through evaluation by Religious affairs committee, so they must perform well and outdo one another by having the best/loudest call.
How would that have impact on my work/teaching?
I would go to work and want to argue with anyone, having a bad mood, especially the previous night had other mishaps on top of that commotion.. |

You know, I have always & still do, find this to be yet one more GLARING example of how Saudis are, without error, duplicitous down to the DNA level.
I mean, here were my 5th & 7th graders telling me how I was going to burn in Hell for being an unbeliever right next to my parents for taking me away from the one true religion!
Wadda load of Malarkey!
I often thought to myself (God forbid I utter it!), how great an opportunity for those who AUTHENTICALLY believe in that load of fecal matter to allow non-believers to consume during Ramadan in public so they can point and say, "Looky lil' Abdullah/Abeer at how weak the non-believing low-lifes are! They cannot resist, while we, God's Chosen are much, MUCH stronger! Surely, this is proof that we are strong & right.  |

I've been seen eating out in public during Ramadhaan (sick, and also a traveller on another occasion)... no one stared. No one cared. And I'm a Muslim. No point in quoting what people are thinking if you have no proof of it. Many, many people do not fast during Ramadhaan. Health problems, menses, travelling... It's not something that stands out, to be honest.
And as for the night prayers.. people know this is expected in Saudi. If people know it happens, and then moan and groan about it, like it's something wrong and a burden for them to hear it.. then maybe they just shouldn't be taking job positions in such a country. But hey.. that's money for you... |

| Ramadan is a joke! It's supposed to be about fasting but there is no real fasting just delayed gratification for a few hours. In Oman they just wait until it's dark and then party until the early hours. The rich guys have their bachelor pads and go there after the family dinner to drink with their mates and the Chinese girls. The only people who really have a hard time are the maids who have to stay up all night cooking and washing up and then look after the children all day whilst the woman recovers from her exertions! I has a Ramadan ex-pats party and my Omani mates were the first to arrive and the last to leave and they weren't shy of the pigs in blankets either! |

Unfortunately, Omani's don't observe Ramadhaan as it should be, in the case you've mentioned. You find Muslims in the west doing a far better job!  |

This is true all over the Middle East. Oman is no better or worse... in fact, it very likely has more sincere practitioners of the faith - not that they would be in many of our expat social groups. MuscatGary has made it clear in many posts on the Oman board that his friends in Oman were mainly his drinking buddies. LOL (not that there is anything wrong with that, but it is a small sub-set of a country)
Generally Ramadhan has become delayed gratification and merely a switching of day/night for most people. To me, it was very much like what Christians have done to Christmas. Three months of shop till you drop, then a month of office parties and other parties with friends and family where people gorge on holiday food and booze. Culminating in a frenzy of package opening where half the kids throw temper tantrums because they didn't get everything they wanted.
That said, in both cultures there are sincerely religious people, who remember the reason for season... while the rest of us pretend members of the group do as we please. I don't believe that there are many of us here on this board who should be criticizing how any major cultural religions are practiced unless we point out that none of them have 100% compliance with all the "rules."
