Filling up a schedule is one thing. Keeping it that way is another. Not sure where you are teaching your Russian students, but in Russia proper word-of-mouth is important. Most new students are sent from existing clients, with minimal effort on a teacher's part. Not likely to happen if they depart on their dignity. |

Anyone have anything constructive to add with regard to subjects they find useful? |

I think others have contributed constructive comments in connection to the various aspects of this thread.
Regarding subjects that are useful for students, asking them whst their learning needs are is usually a good place to start. Few if any of my students have ever indicated that they are interested in controversy, or sharpening their debating skills. Letting the students decide what topics they want to discuss yeilds more interest and more learning, as well as being conducive to raising awareness of various lexical items.
So often I find that the controversial topic angle reflects merely the teacher's preoccupations and ignores the needs of the students, to the point that they go elsewhere. |
