Ok, I am usually not the one to complain about workplaces as I willingly chose to work there (part-time). With Web, I honestly knew they were shady from the beginning and kept my distance in order to avoid problems while I was working there.

I worked there for 8 months and then took my summer holiday from my university job to take certification tests in the US. I had planned to return to Web one day per week on the weekend. My new university I am working at is located next to another Web center and it is far more convenient for me to work there. I contacted the Web manager and let her know I wanted to change centers. She responded with a total BS "new rule" about how part-time teachers who transfer centers will only be able to max out at 120/hour. I knew she was full of it and told her it was no problem and I would go back to the old center and work for my previous rate. She did not want to lose face and as a result told me that part-time teachers are now maxed out at 120/hour regardless. I told her how I felt to say the least. References were of no concern to me!

My word of advice to people considering Web in Dalian is to run away as fast as you can and don't waste your time with them. There are far better centers that do not make you do their dreaded English corners where there are advanced and beginner students all in the same room. This is just my experience and I hope this can help others.

PREACH IT Ben! Smile

It's ALL a bunch of B.S., most of the time, IMHO.
I had a couple friends work there p-t.
They were paid decently, but the company tried hard to low ball them...hired non native foreigners, told the parents they were from america! ha. It's the same all over...NEWBIES, PAY ATTENTION!
This is the ONLY reason I am adding anything here.

Not to pile on, I am sure there are a few decent places...
But after six years of teaching, I have learned a lot.
Everything is for profit, even some Uni's.

I am finally free-lancing, and quite content at the moment.
Finally got tired of all the lies and corrupt b.s. from my "leaders" who really are just using the students and the "international" programs to fill their coffers.

but, MEI BANFA, eh? I also just want to make the green, er...the red now.

STICK IT TO THE MAN, that's my NEW motto.

Good luck Ben...and everyone else...

So, you're working illegally on the side at a center (no judgment about this), then you go to another center and are unhappy when the manager won't give you the same rate as the other center? Perhaps she just didn't want/need to hire you. Maybe your demands weren't worth it for a teacher only willing to work one day a week. Seems like she should be free to negotiate any salary she wants with a part-time worker. It's kind of a take-it-or-leave-it situation.

There's no scam here.

How did they "make you do" their dreaded English corner? Isn't that the kind of thing they were paying you to do?

English corners are typically open to all levels, aren't they?

I actually like them. It's just an hour a week (for me), hanging out with students and getting them chatting. It's fun.

Great! You can come and do mine next time I'm *required* to do one. I'm in Wuxi too, so I'll foot your bus fare. Might even throw in a couple of baozi and the contents of my jiao coin jar if ya promise not to spend it all at once, toots!

English Corners were in the contract with the Webs I've worked for (not in Dalien). I dreaded them initially and then got used to them and it was no big deal...sometimes even fun. I've seen some PT teachers who were allowed to do 90% of their activity in ECs and that's just how they wanted it. Depends of the individual obviously, and on the type of students at your particular school.

Webs and chain schools like them are highly variable within and between cities. The first Web I taught at had a large proportion of teens--not my preferred population. The next time around I had mostly adults, and the difference was like night and day. English Corners with the latter were a breeze.
