Sasha, we all know that you are in the top 1 percent. I was referring to the poster with the military title.

Well, Capt (with a period, however) IS the commonly used military abbreviation for Captain.

Regards,
Sgt. John

So it is exclusively used for military is it? From watching American programmes and films I have noticed they have Captains of police. Airlines worldwide have Captains. Restaurants have Captains. None of the aforementioned can be classed as being military.

So police Captains aren't allowed, pilots are not allowed and anyone else whose job title conferred on them that title is not allowed simply because your undisclosed degree states thus?

No wonder people are chary of posting on this forum when they see such bullying going on.

Goodnight to you too.

If you are trying to suggest that I or anyone else here engaged in bullying, then there are procedures in place for dealing with this. However, being quick to take offence when none was offered, even quicker to accuse posters of making assumptions about you when none were actually made - not much can be done about this.

Sleep well, Capt.

Dear Capt Lugwash,

"So it is exclusively used for military is it?" Nope - and I didn't say it was.

"1. Captain

This all-purpose title, originally identifying the leader of any band of warriors but later formalized to refer to someone holding a specific military rank, is used in civilian contexts to refer to a sports team’s most prominent member, a successful businessperson (“captain of industry”), or any leader.

The rank originated with land-based forces but was carried over in naval contexts when military leaders took nominal command of ships for naval operations or ferrying of troops from one place to another, though the master of the ship — the owner or owner’s representative, who unlike the captain had nautical skills — actually supervised the ship’s operations. Now, any boat owner or operator is called a captain, and the commander of a naval vessel is referred to as the captain (or, less formally, the skipper) regardless of actual rank."

Regards,
John

From the Latin, capitaneus, caput, meaning 'head'. Hence other words like capitol, capital, capitulate, recapitulate, chapter, and, grrrrrr capitalism.

Though the "root word" is the Latin, as you've related, the etymology of capital comes from the use of "head" as it related to the accounting of cattle. So, not grrrr, but, moo. Which for your purposes, might serve even more damning associations.

Yes, that is true for the use in a word like capitalism. But I didn't want to overload the message, and so sink the captain's vessel under the added weight. Especially for those residing in a nook trying to make peace.
