So for the upcoming holiday Sunday, September 28th and Saturday, October 11th are make up days.

What I am wondering is what day is being made up for concerning each day.

I was told those exact same days as you were, if you find that at all reassuring. In my case Sunday September 28th makes up for Wednesday October 1st and Saturday, October 11th makes up for October 2nd. I'm glad there are only two make-up days. Of course, I don't know if this same applies to you.

We're making up October 6 (Sept 28 ) and October 7 (Oct 11) at our school.

The holiday is 3 days:
Wednesday, Oct. 1
Thursday, Oct. 2
Friday, Oct. 3.

Then you have your weekend as normal, Saturday and Sunday, Oct 4-5.

In order to make it a week-long "holiday", you also get Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6-7 off.

This Sunday, Sept. 29, makes up for Oct. 6 and then Saturday, Oct. 11, makes up for Oct. 7th.

I had read a couple of years ago that "they" were thinking of eliminating this so-called "golden week" and just have October 1st as a one-day holiday and throw in a couple more one-day holidays throughout the year to make up for it. Maybe next year . . .

I'm working this Sunday on the Monday schedule and the Sat after the holiday on they didn't tell us yet what day it is.

Can't get over these "make-up days". Most stupid thing about living in China. It's not really a holiday if you have to work 7 days in a row after your holidays to make-up the time. Even the locals think its retarded. Sorry I can't contribute much, no make-up days for me as I am at a training school, heh! (And was rewarded with 3 days off that I don't have to make-up).

Personally I'm only one month removed from a 10 week paid summer holiday and am hardly ready for yet another week off, but I'll take it.

For those unhappy with or who can't figure out why there are make-up days then ask yourself if you'd rather have a three day holiday then go back to work. Because that's all you'd have if there were no make-up days. I prefer seven days off myself and the two make-up days aren't a problem. If you have no Monday or Tuesday classes then you have nothing to make up and can enjoy nine or ten days off. That's what I had last year, and this year I only have make-up classes on one of the two days. You might think the concept of making up two of the seven days is stupid, but no matter how you slice it you're still getting three other days off work with pay and should just be grateful for that.

As Non sequitur astutely mentioned in a previous thread where posters chimed in negatively on this all time favorite topic, the holiday scheme here is arranged so Chinese people, most of whom get little or no annual leave, have the maximum amount of time off to travel or go visit their families. It's not set up for foreign English teachers who already have more time off than they know what to do with and who are likely to just stay home getting plastered anyway. Laughing
