|

I have TEFL experience and teaching qualifications which would enable me to get a job now, but for my future goals I also need the 120 hours of in-class training.
My eye is on China, but I've noticed that Thailand offers lots of competitively priced TEFL courses, especially for the rest of 2014. The problem is, I've read on various forums that December-January is a bad time to be looking for teaching jobs in Thailand. So what do people do for work if they get a qualification over that period? Temporary voluntary work is a possibility, but I understand that you have to switch to a work visa for that, which seems a bit silly if you're not getting paid.
It occurred to me that I could stay with a host family over December, January or February and participate in a 'cultural exchange' for free bed and board, and get a job (and a work visa) later on. Are host family arrangements possible in Thailand, and would I be allowed to stay with a host family on a tourist visa? |

IF you have a degree, the "right" passport and a pulse then take your TEFL course and look for work. The TEFL is NOT a work requirement. A degree IS a visa/work requirement (for legal work).
Dec - Feb is the worst time to be looking. The school year is winding down and very few places are looking for staff. That said, if you are away from a tourist center then you can often find some work (usually part time in language centers) to tide you over till after Songkran.
The bulk of hiring for TEFL occurs from mid April to the start of school in mid May (a long way from the end of your course in Dec/Jan).
IF you plan to hang out over the winter make sure you get a double entry tourist visa BEFORE you come.
