Sometimes it's just 300-350ml which is pretty small for a mug. Most places post the size. So be careful. Otherwise it's gyp city |

One time, I swear they poured happoshu. Didn't go back there again. |

I don't drink happoshu or Asahi Dry so I always ask before I order what kind of beer they have......if it's only the those two I leave. |

Yeah, Super Dry is surprisingly bad. Then again, it is just Coor's lite.
The premium Superdry is pretty good though.
Have to reiterate my personal favorite in Japan; Ebisu Single Malt's (the white can) is pretty dang drinkable. |

I vote optical illusion! Sometimes they pour with an inordinate amount of foam, too |
So true. This has happened to me so many times over the summer I wondered whether
a) I was being cheated intentionally
OR
b) Many Japanese beer servers simply don't know how to pour a mug of beer.
OR
c) It's Japanese culture. Japanese people see glasses of beer with massive heads of foam in TV beer commercials and think that's so cool.
Being the cynic I am, I'll go with choice A. |

I think it's more C.
I've taken several brewery tours and they all demonstrated the "proper" way to pour a beer.
The large head of foam is supposedly there to trap the flavor of the beer in the glass.
Of course, the TV commercials enforce this idea.
Back in my neck of the woods in Canader a person would never pour a beer with a big head of foam.
Totally uncouth! |

Choice (A) - the Japanese are among the most parsimonious people in the world.
Choice (C) - Quite possible, also. It's a land of opposites here. What is considered bad form and practice back in Canada or Ireland is how they want it done here. |

Has anyone tried the new Kirin in a blue can that's supposed to be zero purin and zero something else? |

. Thing is a thick head brings out the flavor by letting it breath. They should let it settle and add more.
I always pour my beer into a glass or a steel cup. It makes it taste better for the most part.
Bad form? More like knowing how to serve it.

Had the Single Malt Yebisu, it is in a white can. It actually was drinkable.
I may switch my brand major brand loyalty to Sapporo. As a lot of the lagers just aren't drinkable to me anymore, thanks craft beer |
Ha, Ha. I was thinking the exact same thing recently. |

You mean with regard to spending money on other people. They're quite generous to themselves. |

Have you tried any of the Autumn / Winter beers that the big beer companies have out?
I have tried these;
Sapporo "The Winter's Tale" (white can with big blue snowflake - 5.5% alc.)
Kirin Autumn beer? - all info in kanji, so I don't know what this one's called (can is white with many red leaves - 6.0 % alc.)
Opinion: Neither of these beers have a particularly distinguishable taste from the regular products these companies sell.
Sapporo's Winter beer: For the winter beer, I expected to taste either something sharp like a highly carbonated pilsner or something heavy like a porter. Instead, this beer, like most typical Japanese beers, produces a big head when you pour it, but feels silky smooth on the tongue.
Kirin's Autumn beer: For an Autumn beer, I expected a full-on taste experience. A beer that is full of flavor (like the dramatic colors of the autum leaves) like a brown or amber beer (perhaps a red beer to match the color of the leaves). This beer has none of that. Silky smooth, easy drinking and forgettable.
If anybody finds any good seasonal beers put out by the big beer companies, by all means, tell us about them here. |
