Things are better than they used to be. I heard of a Canadian in the 90s who had a hard time trying to find a place in Machida (Tokyo).
Later it got easier with a bad economy and a surplus of housing.
Making money started to trump turning down foreigners.
I am moving next week and I got a rent discount.
Osaka people bargain hard, and that is where my spouse is from.
Moving this time of year is cheaper too.
I got a discount on paying the moving company (Sakai), plus three workers will pack my stuff.
If you have pets then it is tough. I live in a house since I have two dogs.
There is one UR housing complex in Yokohama that accepts pets, but the limit is just one pet. |

People who don't live here daily and never had to get a guarantor or pay key money.
Only in Kawasaki can you fight housing discrimination, and be backed by the city.
I have a Japanese spouse. So I have to live in America only then?
Pathetic. |
Tut tut. I lived in Japan for years and years. I don't live there now, and I may have lived there less time than you, but clearly I was paying more attention than you are. I was respected by all and reciprocated by maintaining a sterling reputation and exemplary behavior. I forever remained an 'outside person' of course, but I did my bit to make the locals think well of our kind. My school, a very reputable and famous one that everyone knew back then, was my guarantor, and I had to pay key money though the school representative was embarrassed to tell me of this bit of local corruption, as he saw it. This was back when foreigners were as rare as hen's teeth and one look at me told anyone I was a gaijin sensei, and could be trusted. I guess 'certain parties' have tarnished the image of the gaijin sensei since then. Wasn't me!
Congratulations on your Japanese spouse. You had to be aware of what issues might crop up in your journey through life together. Are you really asking me to sort all that out for you? "Pathetic."

I think many of us probably know 'how to deal with Japanese' and have lived here and learnt the language and customs to a higher level that [sic] you have.
I would have thought so, but apparently not, or perhaps it is that even though you have learned more than me, you still insists that your own culture, and your own personal needs take precedent over everything else in the world. And even though you know better, you habitually yell and stamp your feet to get what you want. How's that working out for you?
|
I'm not insisting on any culture or personal needs to take presedent over anyone. Nor am I stamping my feet to get what I want. Only saying that refusing to rent to someone based on their race is wrong, which you say you agree with. And that it would be better for everyone in Japan if such barriers didn't exist. |

Also, that going into a Japanese hotel in LA and renting a room is a completely different kettle of fish to getting a landlord with a "Japanese only" rule to rent out an apartment to you. |

And who says anyone hasn't learnt to deal with racism or discrimination?
If someone you met today was complaining about a late train, I wonder if you'd get in their face and tell them...
"If you can't handle late trains then you shouldn't be using them. Go home to your own country and drive a car if you don't like Chinese trains. Why should China have to improve its train system for you? How well is stamping your feet like a baby going for you, trains running any faster now? If you just rode the train the way Chinese people do, then it wouldn't be late! Don't believe me? Well, last year I took a train in America that went through a Chiense area, I acted like a Chinese person and the train got me from A to B in time! My advise to you is to learn how to deal with Chinese trains and to start riding them like a Chinese person. If you can't do that then you should just go home".
Probably not, but then that's what you get on an internet forum I suppose.
People are allowed to complain about something and moan about things they don't like from time to time. It doesn't always mean that they're doing anything to deserve it and nor does it mean that they're attacking the people or country they live in or trying to change the culture. |

People who lived in Japan who had a good experience and did not deal with discrimination. That is nice.
But just because of that, that means people who have had to deal with discrimination should just go home?
Come on now. |

What are you? Nine years old? "It's not fair, mummy! It's not fair!": is that all you have to say?
I tried to explain to you how to deal with the Japanese, but I guess my methods are to subtle and grown-up for you to understand.
The Japanese (and the French!) are what they are, if you can't deal with it, don't go live in their countries. I'm done with you. |
No, I was deadly serious there. And thank you for gracing this forum, and setting a good example of the Japanese traits of calm, decorum and modesty for us all to follow. |

I faced a strange form of discrimination. I rented a luxury 1LDK in Hayama with sea views and a shared pool and tennis court, it was 270.000 yen a month, the Japanese could not get it out their heads that a white single guy lived there. I also had a brand new Toyota Harrier parked in the mansion's car park which probably cost another 20.000 yen a month to rent. When they met me in the lift the residents would question me and ask what I did. When I said I was an English teacher they would not look too happy. This was in 1998. |

These things are not always funny, but if you can laugh, good.
Five years ago I reported my new address at city hall.
The woman could not believe a foreigner would live in house, just in a mansion or apato. |

That's right. It was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. All this was possible in the mid-1980s, and if you are little old me.
Hey, do me a solid and tell RM1983 (registered moron 1983) he's on my ignore list. He's way too sarcastic, even for me, which is saying something! Ask him if he can do anything, besides whinge and how much he is paid to do so? |
