The advice to go to a tax professional is very sound advice, actually. Not because a pro is always correct but because if something goes wrong (as apparently happened with Noelle,) the pro bears a certain amount of responsibility to get it fixed or to go to bat for you.

I think many expat EFL teachers likely make the mistake of having a parent or sibling hire their own local tax 'expert' to do the paperwork. These folks probably very rarely, if ever, do anything for expats.

There should be some database with contact info for tax preparers who are familiar with the special requirements around living/working as an expat.

Thus far Noelle's situation is far from fixed, and she will likely have to hire another "professional" to fix it for her and it could take her a year or two to get it all cleared up.

Most Americans with a decent education and reading skills can do the computer based tax programs like TurboTax or H&R Block. You need only read and answer the same questions that the person at tax office asks you and types in. (and pay a fraction of the cost)

For those who can't overcome their fear of forms and reading instructions (skills many of us are teaching to our students), interview your "professional" and if s/he hasn't done a significant number of filings for expats - preferably teachers, find someone else. Your local H&R Block in Left Overshoe, Nebraska, won't know much more than you with your computer. While the company theoretical backs you up, the aggravation will be significant.

I have a number of friends overseas who have figured out that after the first year (which can be more complicated because of the partial year), most EFL teachers can just use the online tax programs that e-file and it takes little or no time or cost.

Why does Coder persistently delete his posts after he has read them ?
A violation of the whole idea of sharing thoughts, ideas, questions and information in the public domain !
