|
|
Well, I need some advice and I'm in a pickle.
Things ended badly with my school and we agreed on the 25th of October I wouldn't work there anymore.
The school 'tricked' me into handing over my passport, saying the police needed it a few days before.
Now I Want to leave China as I've had several other offers, but the school flatly refuses to hand back my passport.
Any advice? I called the embassy, and they will follow up.
Local police don't seem interested. |

I don't understand. What do they hope to gain from this? Are they just so angry they want to do anything they can to make your life difficult? |

Contact the city FAO.
Should be based in the PSB exit/entry building somewhere in your city. They have a lot of power over the schools and should be able to sort problems like this out. |

This is criminal behavior. Doubt it is happening to the OP, but if it is happening contact the police. No one can hold your passport! |

One hour after the call to the embassy and problem solved.
Got to say, it helps being British.
Not so sure the school 'big boss' would be running so scared and apologizing so much if I had been from an African country or a small Baltic state. |

I endorse this route as well.
Often the local fuzz don't really know what to do or care. They probably are hoping you'll just go away.
If you don't speak enough Chinese, get a friend to translate for you. Make sure you have your documents on hand to show the FAO when you meet with him or her.
First though, request a very polite meeting with your boss and ask why they can't return your passport and see if you can get a timeline on its return. If they stonewall you or you've already done this and they've given you nothing but broken dreams and empty promises (every country song ever), go right to the FAO. |

Imagine if a British university took the passport of a Chinese student for some reason - maybe non-payment of fees or hall of residence costs?
There would be questions in Parliament! |

Nawt to do with being ye olde British, guv...any one of our embassies would do likewise.
The general policy these days is that the passport is the property of the government issuing it, not the "owner" of the passport. Effectively your boss had stolen the property of the limey government, not from you....the embassy will usually just call up and explain the situation, and how much of a diplomatic stink they can raise if need be. The PSB, Chinese government and co. will likely side with the embassy simply to avoid all the mandatory paperwork required by international law which will be involved if they "officially" protest. Local cops will snap their heels together, toot suite. Regardless all's well that ends well - good you got it back and good you're moving on...seems as is all too frequent the school showed you their true colors in the end. |

First, I generally don't buy it. Something seems off and fishy here. But, fact is, why are you here crying on an internet forum seeking advice over something as serious as theft of a passport? Get more involved with the police and force them to be interested. We're not talking about a vendor refusing to give you that one mao in change - it's a passport - thus have some balls and get it done and get it returned; typing away on a keyboard on this site is useless, wasting time and effort all for NOTHING of consequence from replies. POLICE, EMBASSY, ETC. That is how you cure this. You agreed you wouldn't work there anymore as you say - the whole post sounds fishy. You got fired and they supposedly have your passport illegally - when it could be it actually is with some entity like the PSB or FEC folks - canceling this or that. You seem to be accusing them without knowing for sure where it is ow who has it. Something is off on this post and if it is all "true" then get off the computer, stand up, get out there and force the issue with the police, embassy or whatever. Like it or not, agree or not, this is YOUR issue and it seems you are doing little to nothing to get it back - have some balls and get it done. |

Excellent point there, Franz Lizst! Stupid little imperialist dog party hats off to you. Well done! Very well done indeed. If anyone was moderating here these days, you ought to get a sticky hickey.
Shame about Bleeding Blood. Probably best we ignore him.
And you Limeys: the clown is right. Keep ingesting vitamin C on your long-ass voyages to avoid the scurvy. You can thank him in the next world if you never happen to meet him at the pub in this one. |
