I have a bachelor's degree in ESL (4 year program with internships, and will have a year of experience being a full time ESL teacher (grades 7 to 9) in a private school.
Much has happened in my life since I got the job, and I decided to teach abroad next year instead of renewing my contract. |
Frankly, if you were to teach in Canada for another year (for a total of 2 years' experience), more doors would open to you with some of the better employers worldwide. |

Some of us like winter. |
......that's right.
I like lots of snow but I can do without the -30C temps in Canada. And,the wind chills in the -60C range.
No thanks! |
Me too! And thanks to the glories of Google images, we can now ooh and ahh over the beauty of snow from the comfort of southern Mexico. |

Ah, there is no such thing as bad weather, only inadequate clothing, as my Russian friends have always assured me. The schnauzer and I have new Scandinavian parkas; bring it on! Minus 20 forecast for my region mid-next week |

Hm, so I've heard. Is it really that significant? Can you give me examples? |

I don't know exact salaries, but generally, a teaching license plus a couple or more years of teaching experience from your home country can net a private international school teacher in the UAE and Qatar, for example, $2400-$4000 USD/month (tax free) plus free housing, airfare, and health insurance (info posted by Teach Away). You can find out more about international schools on International Schools Review's and Teach Away's sites. |

Examples -
Thailand:
- Generic EFL teachers earn 30-40k thb/month ($1000-1300 CAD) with no benefits.
- Top tier international schools recruit from abroad, pay about 100-130k thb/month ($3400-4500 CAD) + benefits like: housing, airfare, full medical insurance, etc.
Taiwan:
- Generic EFL: 50-60k twd ($1800-2200 CAD) with no benefits.
- Government schools (if you are a licensed teacher):
88,000 twd ($3200 cad) + housing, airfare, medical, family relocation assistance, etc.
Hong Kong NET teacher: US $3460 + benefits.
That home country licensure and couple years in a classroom before you venture abroad does make a difference.
