|
|
So, I have seen the rise of recruiters here in Vietnam in the last few years. Now it seems fewer & fewer employers are doing the actual recruiting & hiring for jobs.
EIV is an example of a recruiter which poses as a "school". What service do they provide? Oh, yes, they run job ads on free websites and then take about $5USD per hour, so instead of making $24USD an hour, the foreign teacher is making $19 an hour (or whatever). The only thing EIV does is receive the resumes, arrange an interview and have you sign the infamous, draconian EIV contract.
FYI: "VietnamTeachingJobs.com" is wholly owned by EIV, and in fact, check the contact info for VTJ.com and EIV, you will find the same phone number listed. Call it, and a "Mr. Son" answers it. So, anybody who uses that site is actually using EIV as a recruiter.
Then there are a number of copy-cats around, who also provide some "service" and for that, you get to pay them about $5 USD per hour of your salary.
The how & why of "schools/employers" using a head-hunter seems obvious: They can simply defer everything to the agency, and replace the foreign teacher with just a phone call.
But what about the fact that the teacher is "losing" $5USD per hour (or more) for each hour taught??? Of course, this is not spelled out clearly in the contract. Also, this is not something for a fixed time period, say a 90 day probation during which the recruiter gets the salary differential, this is built into the contract, so it seems that the recruiter keeps taking their cut of the salary for as long as you keep working under the contract. |

Best thing is for teachers to just go around them. Send your CV's directly to the schools and try to contact HR. A bit more leg work, will get you more money also. I don't think these services will take off here because the Vietnamese are not willing to part with any money to the recruiter (if possible) and try to get the teacher signed up to them directly cutting the recruiter out.
My old shithole of Neverlearn is using them, because the foreign staff have left and none of the management left speaks English. |

Well, this is what you have posted on another thread http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=109025

Yes, the EFL market in VN is saturated with EFL "teachers". Everybody from seasoned pro's with exp. & lot's of certs to fresh off the plane "newbies" and everything in between.
|
but on this thread you're saying that use of recruiters is on the rise in the TEFL industry in VN.
So, lemme get this straight... schools have a massive surplus of applicants to choose from but, at the same time, many schools need recruiters in order to find teachers?
Am I missing some crucial bit of info here. I can't quite get my head around this.

Graft.
The schools are funded by the parents and/or MOET to hire English teachers so that Vietnam can be the next Singapore.
But the heads of those schools can't be bothered, or are incapable of, dealing directly with teachers so a slew of "recruiters" have popped up to do the leg work. The school head takes his cut from the funds, the recruiter takes his, and the $15 left over goes to the sucker who signed up for this gig. |

Very good summary, thanks!
Also, many of the less than "top-tier" language schools, including schools outside the major urban areas are using recruiters. Many of these "schools" pay absolute garbage, But I guess once the wage has been eaten up by recruiter "fees" there isn't much left over to pay the foreigner foolish enough to sign-up for such "work". Also, many of the language school owners, admin & staff simply can't speak English. They have a difficult time to make a simple sentence. So, hiring some sort of "recruiter" means they don't have to deal with the foreigner directly during recruitment (and how are the supposed to communicate once hired?), but at the end of the day, remember, an agent or a recruiter is getting a fee, a cut of the salary from the foreign teacher. |

Recruiters are one of the worst aspects of the EFL scene in Korea. I hope these vultures lose all their money and go out of business fast.
But I'm not holding my breath.
Advice to newbies - NEVER USE A RECRUITER - just never do it. If we don't feed them they will die off. If we do they will grow and multiply like rats. |
