Howdy ya'll
I am leaving for Brazil in september to start traveling and hopefully teaching. I will be looking for jobs as I go and I am starting in Sao Paulo. Anyway my question is whether or not to bring my bicycle... Mountain biking is what I really live to do but is it a smart idea to bring a 1400 dollar bike to a third world country? I need some experienced people to help me on this one! thanks a ton!

I wouldnt call Brazil a 3rd world country...

Dont take anything you cant afford to lose.

I had a laptop stolen from me two days ago... but at least it was a ratty old PII that I paid only $200 for, so I cant whine too much...

Good advice, ls650, and welcome to the club. (The laptop thing happened to me, too.)

Sorry to hear that you got ripped off. Sad

I would strongly suggest taking it with you as you'll regret not having it once you have arrived. This happened to me when I went to Indonesia a few years ago, I left my Specialized FSR at home & was sick when I realised what a mistake I'd made. I tried to get it shipped over but the costs were ridiculous. I'm now here in China & after searching around I've managed to pick up a decent frame & import components from Malaysia & I wouldn't be without it. I'm leaving for Indonesia again later this year & I'm definitely taking it with me.

Common sense prevails on this one, don't lock it & leave it ANYWHERE! I take mine into the school, into the gym, into the BAR! If it's not with me, it's locked up in my apartment. DO try to check the availability of spares etc at your destination as you could end up replacing your XT for some heavy cheap local crap if you damage anything.

Also, don't forget to deflate your tires in transit!!!
