Oman interests me, but the rest of the area seems like a sweaty wasteland of intolerance.
As for the OP: I'm a bit of a hermit who doesn't find Asians particularly attractive, so I probably save about 90% of what I make (before vacations). I recognize most people aren't like me, but the savings potential is still strong. |
Why live somewhere and not eat the local food? |
Not that I have any right to be picky, but so few of them even turn my head. When I remember how immature the vast majority of them are, I keep walking.
Uh, we're talking about dumplings, right? |

| I get paid in that range. I do not live too high on the hog. But, I do travel often and like dining out at western places a few times a month. I can usually send home between $1000-$1500 a month. $1500 is when I have much left over from the previous month. But, I also save some money because of the winter and summer breaks when I do not get paid (except a holiday pay of 2000 RMB). I usually work camps on my breaks. I use that money to travel after the camps are finished). Realistically, I can send home about $7000 a year. |

| To answer the OPS question, I would say 5000 - 9000 is what you can expect to spend each month on everything. Of course, your first two months are expensive because you'll be buying all kinds of little stuff to improve your living space and conditions. And you won't see much income during that time. |

Why the heck would one come to Asia if you didn't find the girls attractive?
I mean what other reason is there to be here? The West has nicer food, better housing, the rule of law etc. You're not here for a love of teaching because real teachers would get home country certified so they could work in a school that actually values education.
If it weren't for Asian girls I'd be on the next plane back home. |

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm here for the little slippers they give you when enter someone's home. When I was in high school, my crazy cousin went to China and brought me back a pair of Beijing Capital Airport Hotel slippers. I remember how white and soft they were and I felt compelled to discover the amazing ancient civilization that so valued foot comforts. |

But Shanghai, we have fluffier and bigger slippers in the UK?
MY dad's slippers are thicker, better quality and generally much better than either the slip on sandals Chinese wear to shower [and pop to the shop in their pjs] or the ones you get in hotels with what is basically a thin piece of cardboard and almost felt like paper on top that lies flat once in the pack. |

glad to see this thread, i actually had the same question.
i've been scoping out a couple of uni jobs, and nearly all of them are in the range of 6-8,000RMB per month. none of them are in Shanghai or Beijing, but smaller cities.
this seems pretty low to me, but what everyone's said here is that the cost of living in China is really low. problem is, i need to save about US$1,000 a month, and 8,000RMB is only $1,300
is it really possible to live on only around 2,000RMB per month assuming housing is provided? seems like a bit of a stretch to me?
like weigookin74 I'm also currently employed in South Korea and can put away $1,000 per month fairly easily here without needing to live like a hermit either. |

What kind of lifestyle are you looking for? 2,000 is possible, plenty of Chinese do it, but not much fun for a westerner. People get those jobs for the low hours. If you want to save more you need to get lucky or work something more like a full time job. Or do extra work on the side. |
