Lots of myths... I didn't live in a compound---many teachers don't. Whenever I wanted to socialize, I easily met up with friends (Saudis included) on weekends and evenings for getogethers.

Uh, Detroit, Chicago, and Baltimore are also challenging places to live. Some teachers find the Kingdom mildly difficult but manageable, while others should never have gone to KSA (and yet continue to complain about it even though they've departed the country). Anyway, I'm a former US Army brat and grew up outside the US. I can handle cultural ambiguity; my parents raised me right. As for drinking, it's never been a priority for me.

Actually, I had my own endless "supply" of lovely girls willing to talk to me (for free)---they were my students. I'm female, by the way. As for freely travelling, Dubai and Bahrain aren't far for those who want some major R&R on the weekends and/or over breaks.

My employer in the US contributed 40% toward my master's degree, which allowed me to change careers. Nuff said on that subject. Personal choice.
