Hello guys, I'm writing to you because I'm seeking orientation about being an ESL teacher, I have a Bachelors Degree, previous experience teaching English, U.S citizen, and getting TESL certified at the moment. I got in contact with an agency a couple of months ago and first I was told that I was going to get housing, Z visa, hour paid, flight reimbursement, etc, the whole deal. But now they're telling me that they cant get me the Z visa because the government of china implemented an age requirement that stipulates that people born in the years 1987-present cant qualify for Z visa, only from the 1987 and back, and they told me that an M visa would be pretty much the same. I got in contact with an ESL teacher in china and he told that is a pretty common thing, that theirs a lot of people working with out a visa, but honestly I don't feel comfortable going over seas that way. I would really appreciate if you could tell me how much of this is true. Thank you very much for your help guys. Confused

I have been told 25 is the minimum age for a Z visa. True, some people do work illegally but they are just like a Mexican in Texas who has wandered across the border; they have no rights and can be easily cheated. Also. the cops showed up at my school on Friday demanding to see all our papers. I'm in Beijing where they seem to be strict now. Some poor, rural areas are different as they need teachers. Beijing has too many and it takes 3 months to jump through all the hoops to get a work visa. Big pain in the keester.

In theory you need a degree and 2 years teaching experience to get the Z visa. Maybe sometimes, even when the local authorities are wishy-washy on the3 years, they may still have a minimum age of 23 or 24 in mind.

But, no. There's no strict rule on age as such, and the idea that it's either national or pegged at 27 years or upwards is either complete BS or has never been announced.

They're lying to you, is what I'm saying.

Anywhere else but the big three cities, and my answer would effectively be "no."

Shanghai has no such restriction. I became legal just shy of my 23rd birthday. My school has 22-year-old teachers now.
