Hi,

I have an MA in English, a B.Ed., and CELTA and would love to find a job in a college or university. Where are they most often advertised and when? I know the academic year starts in April; would it be advisable to take a job with, say, Westgate (?), just to get to Japan and make some contacts? I don't have the three academic publications some colleges are asking for.

Thanks.

Emily

Emily working for westgate is not the same as working for a university. Westgate is a conversation school that dispatches teachers to work on university campuses in English conversation lounges. Teachers hired by universities directly are hired under different contracts than Westgate.

With no publications you could only expect to pick up part time work- many jobs are advertised 'in-house' or through referrals by teachers who are leaving as many schools want to avoid an avalanche of resumes from a job posting.

If you are looking for jobs the Language Teacher magazine advertised on their Jobs page

http://www.jalt-publications.org/tlt/

Jobs are also advertised in Japanese but you need to be able to read and understand written Japanese. University jobs will also require that you attend an interview in Japan. Hiring season for Spring 2005 is November-early January. PM for more info.
