|
|
Hello
A question on behalf of a friend...
She is a New Zealand citizen and has a Master's Degree from NZ.
Perfect English...
She would like to teach in Saudi.
However, physically, she is Asian. Moved to NZ as a teenager. I.e. Technically a non native speaker.
Would being Asian count dramatically against her OR would being a NZ citizen and having a Master's Degree from a western University be the dominant factor?
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

The above is what's important---not her ethnicity. Plus, the many non-native EFL teachers working in KSA represent a very diverse demographic. |

Thank you for your reply.
Ironically, she has tried to get jobs in Asia and been unsuccessful bcause they want a "white woman". In Asia, they will hire Russians with little English ahead of her simply based on their skin. Thus her question.
I shall let her know. Thank you.
One other question....would she get paid as a Western citizen? Or would they pay her less based on her skin color / ethnicity? |

They will pay her based on her qualifications relevant to the position; they won't give a hoot about what she looks like. However, she definitely should state on her CV that she's a native English speaker, along with her nationality. For example: New Zealand national; native English speaker. |

| Salary will depend on her nationality, ie what passport she uses. Students will be curious. I really believe that there is less blatant racism in KSA than in UK or US. (Unless you are a menial from the Third World !) |

| If she were African it may be more of a problem. I would tell her to say she is a native speaker and don't divulge where she is from. My wife is Somali and there is plenty of racism in Saudi. Basically she will say she is American and if they push during the interview, which they will, she will say she is Somali but raised in America. I would suggest the same for your friend. Downplay the non native, in fact don't bring it up. Maybe even lie about when she moved to NZ. |
