I am here reminded of Iraq's former late great Minister of Misinformation who made daily pronouncements that led to his eventual self-destruction.

MW,

A bunch of interesting posts yesterday. Thanks. If this is the result of a lockdown in your school then I hope it lasts for another month, if you know what I mean.

Cheers. Wink

Stir: A general term for prison dating from the mid-19th century. "Stir crazy," originated around 1925 to describe a prisoner who had become mentally disordered due to imprisonment.

Use of this term began at Alcatraz, a Federal Maximum Security prison in the middle of the San Francisco Bay.

So our little campus is under lockdown, (another prison term), and many will think my postings are just the product of going stir crazy. However, I have complete freedom to come and go as I like and to take one student of my choice as my interpreter. I have a Chinese driver's license and a motor cycle, both arranged courtesy of my school.

No, these are not the rantings of a dillusional prisoner, they are the product of a team of writers, two Chinese, one Brit and one American who are publishing Class "A" papers on teaching ESL in China in the hope of bringing about much needed awareness and change in a system that has evolved without leadership or control and produces little of value but drains the Chinese treasury.

Much may be obvious to the regulars in this forum but there are many newbies and uninitiated who are unaware. If the postings are boring, just avoid them, but there is no need to be rude or insulting as some seem pathologically compelled to do.

Some other expat here correct me if I'm wrong, but these terms which you have just taught us were ones we have learned (and remembered), thankyouverymuch, in 4th grade.

However, the fact that as a non-native speaker of English you have struggled and managed to learn them and, somewhat correctly, use them in your mid-twenties is noteworthy. We applaud you.

Now, please, work on rules of capitalization.

NOYB - (which I assume stands for "None Of Your Business")

Were you born obnoxious or do you work real hard at it?

Dear Comrade,
Yes, we must attack all those enemies of the ESL Industry at every turn. They lurk in the classrooms of the unsuspecting great chinese people. Keep posting and never give up the fight.

No, it comes naturally in the presence of those who are, to use the politically correct term, intellectually challenged.
