I am seeking similar answers to a thread below but with a few more questions.

I've read about how from the start of January it is not now possible to enter Vietnam on a tourist visa and then have this upgraded to a business visa/work permit once a job has been secured. I also read however that for work under three months a permit is not required.

I want to come and teach in Hanoi until the end of April. Can I do this legally without securing a job before I come? I have a degree and relevant qualifications. Also, I'm from the UK and after doing lots of research it is still not clear to me precisely what I need to bring. I know original certs. but I've also read about a criminal record check and getting certs notarized?

Is it true that for work under three months a permit is not required?

Many thanks in advance.

Hmmn. Why bother?

There is a huge 2 week holiday coming and schools will not be hiring much until Mid-March. Leaving 6 weeks to recoup airfare costs and so forth.

It is HARD to pick up a well paid job and usually takes a few months.

I don't think 3 months is a worthwhile 'stint'. 6 months - just about OK.

Even a year is unlikely to be very satisfying because you will endure a lot of hassle and not make much money and so on.

Thanks for the reply.

I went to Hanoi for about 5 months before and enjoyed it, but I had a job before.

I'm at a loose end for a few months, I still have a few friends there, I just wanted to jump over for a few months. Not making enough to recoup the flight is not an issue, just want to pick up a bit of work. Like a working holiday.

Can anyone answer the question about the current work permit situation, and if it's true that work under three months does not require a permit?

It has never been 'legal' to work without a work permit - but many have done so especially under 3 months. I think there is a grey area because people have been allowed to work while applying for a WP which takes 3-6 months - so I understand.

I'm sure you could pick up odd bits of work and teach private classes for a couple of months and more than likely get away with it. But I'm not sure how much of a holiday it would be...

Good advice. Right now is NOT the time to come to VN and look for work, esp. not short-term work.

Try Thailand instead, they always need a few more good TEFL'ers for 3 month stints Laughing
