|
|
Hi Everyone,
Someone new to Saudi PM'd me and asked about the best jobs in Saudi. Even though I only spent a year there, I answered "Aramco" since they had the best housing, benefits, etc.
But, even Aramco has it's share of problems. There is no perfect job anywhere; but, I'm guessing Saudi it's guaranteed to have some serious problems or other.
What do you guys think from your experience? |

I would say the best jobs are on the east coast like KFUPM, which is owned by Aramco.
It really depends on the person and what you need.
KAU has the least work for the most pay. |

Well, they're both owned by the same boss: the Saudi government.

Frankly, the better jobs pretty much go to teachers with top qualifications (e.g., relevant MA and years of verified TEFL experience) with recruiting generally done each March at TESOL Arabia's job fair.
That's the best response to that question. |

KAU hires year round and if you can handle being alone for extended periods of time it is ok.
No serious teacher goes to Saudi. Its M or 3M - money or money, Mecca and Medina. |

Dear Hatcher,
Strange - I knew a good numer of "serious teachers" there.
Maybe you ran with the wrong crowd - but you went there, right? Does that mean you're not a serious teacher?
Regards.

In my day a serious teacher was one who didn't laugh or even smile. |

"KFUPM is owned by ARAMCO". Wow ! Are we supposed to take advice from this poorly-informed Frank ? |

I was there and no, I was not a serious teacher. And I left.
I have traveled over 60 countries and that place is the most difficult place I have ever been. |

Ah the timelessness of Saudi Arabia, you could say that both poetically and literally Think of all the things that make Saudi Arabia difficult, all of them already discussed here before. |

I hesitate to write this because I know several apologists will come after me.
But one thing I struggle with is the way I should treat Saudis in my country.
How do Saudis treat non-Saudis? Many DDD workers dont get paid. When I meet them at home, I often want to say, Ill treat you the way I was treated there...
Most tell me they dont know any better. |

I spent several years making a serious effort to seriously improve the way we do things here at XXX, then I realized I was seriously deluded. I am looking forward to leaving XXX forever this summer and not taking myself too seriously ever again. |

The male Saudi stepping out of a car to attend English classes is no different than the Male Saudi that would hop off of a camel to look you over. There hasn't been any educational intervention regarding moral imperatives and personal rights between those days and now. |
