Posted: Thu Feb 05, 2015 8:50 am Post subject: Your opinion please - dog problem. Employer won't help... |
|
|
Before I accepted my current job I told my employer that I had dog (Boxer) that I spent a fortune on bringing to China and to put through quarantine. My new employer lured me with free housing and I immediately pointed out I have a dog. Their FAO sent me a an email "no problem" so long as he is house broken (he is). So after I spend 1,000 yuan to move from my old apartment in Haidian to my new one near Tuanjiehu, my roomie complains that he doesn't want to live with my dog in the apartment. Why? Because the girls he brings home (different every month) are afraid of "the big dog"!
Butch does not bite or growl and won't even go up to strangers. He is very well trained and super friendly. So after two months my HR lady at school says I have to get rid of the dog or find another place to live on my own dime. I think my roomie should go look for a new place because according to the contract we signed, we are not allowed to have overnight guests in the school-owned apartment. How do I deal with this? I have tried talking with my roomie but he is getting hostile and won't budge. I only took this new job because I was saving 3,500 a month on housing.

| Point out the over-night thingie in the contract. Maybe take a picture or two (nothing dirty, maybe just the two of them sleeping) as backup proof. Sometimes you gotta be assertive around here. |

| Im not going to rat out my roomie. That would make me look like an ass with all my colleagues. 12 of us live in the same building - work at the same school. I'm trying to get one of the others to switch with me but they are all settled in and don't want to be bothered. |

It's admirable that you won't tell on your roommate. Is it because many of the twelve do the same thing?
The only choice then, seems to take your own apartment, and then not complain about it because it was your own decision to do so. It doesn't have to be nice. Since you have a large dog, it's probably better to get a modest place that his activities can't lose you your deposit in. Maybe a nice ground floor place in a workers' housing area. You can walk your dog to the shops or open areas around there, and no one will mind at all, and I'm betting you will have more peace of mind living alone with your best friend. |

The whole reason I switched jobs is to get a furnished apartment complete with cable and 10 MB internet connection included with an elevator (my last place was an old apartment on the 6 floor - no elevator) and I save 3,500 a month. Best of all I am like 700 meters away from the subway line that is two stops from my school. See what I mean? Should I just poison my roomie and be done with the arguments?
Relax - just joking. |

But this is the risk people take when sharing housing. Even if your roommate doesn't have guests overnight, he has the right to say he's not happy sharing a space with a dog. In other words, you're asking others to accommodate your situation. That said, perhaps you can find a sharing situation somewhere else with a teacher who doesn't mind pets. Otherwise... |

You know, now that you mention this, I was never once told I would have a roommate until I walked into the apartment with my bags and saw a huge guy in his underwear sitting in the sofa and playing video games on the TV! There is no mention of a roommate in my contract and in the email it says, "You will provided your own furnished apartment and you need not pay for anything other than the electricity and water that you consume" But he spends 80% of his free time in the apartment and I am there maybe 30% of the time but I am tired of hanging out in my room when he brings t the girls over. Sometimes I wish I could get Butch to growl a little. |

That would not be fair to Butch. I have had him for three years now and he is the best dog I ever had - super loyal and friendly. All this selfish *beep* thinks of is who he will be bedding next. There must be an STD epidemic in China???
What I really worry about is that this roomie might poison my dog or accidentally leave the door open one day when I am at work and he is not. We have different days off. |

I wouldn't worry overly about those to things. First of all, your roommate most likely isn't as evil as all that. Poisoning an innocent animal is pretty harsh, and in any case he may see that he'd be the only suspect if the crime were brought to light. As for getting lost - you know all those stories about dogs and cats traveling 19,000 miles over three continents (whatever) to find their way home? It turns out many are not true. In one case, it was shown that the cat involved was not the original cat! Even when it does happen, I read that it doesn't mean every dog is capable of such a wonderful sense of place. However, if Butch just wandered out into the streets around your apartment, he'd have to be quite a dim bulb, since he's not just a young pup, not to find his way back. Your roommate would have to find a taxi driver that would agree to have your big dog in the cab, go to some far off quarter of the city, or the surrounding countryside, preferably over a major river or two, and still could not be entirely certain Butch wouldn't turn up eventually. Then, again, there would be the more larger problem of his being the prime suspect in letting the dog out.
Sounds to me like roomie has just latched on an easy target to criticize - your great big dog who scares girls. If you had no dog, doubtless he'd be on you for leaving hair in the sink, or dishes unwashed. He'd pause his video games long enough to find something about you he doesn't like. You can be sure about that. |

Jeez Louise ------ WHO, in China, in their right mind - okok, I know - we all need our brains read - would have a ROOM MATE.
Time to switch jobs, dude.
I don't know ANY expat who would accept shared housing. FGS.
It's CHINA - it's GOOD to be alone. Trust me. Been there, done that. |

Ratty, I know you're just a nice guy who means well, but the dog doesn't exist so save your breath. |

| Today I just found out that another colleague read about my problem here on Dave's and told my roomie about it. Its not hard to figure out since I have the only boxer in our community. So I expect the shit will hit the fan tonight when I get home from work. He's off today. Stay tuned. |
