Dear Johnslat

And I always thought that it was just a jingoistic Metallica song : )

But look at my avatar. Don't need to get so close...

I am also teaching a class for academic skills, but for graduate students. And believe it or not, part of the curriculum is teaching how to be actively involved in class and critically examine ideas and be ready and willing to discuss them. Granted, it is not technically a language class, but all the students are EFL types.

How are the chess lessons going? Buy a set yet?☺️

To whom is the chess question directed? I'm afraid I can't critically analyze it because my EFL teacher didn't help me to acquire thinking skills...

You forgot that you were using Gary's book, didn't you? Oh well, the memory comes and it goes..., doesn't it?

Ah, that's what you meant, Gaijin. Sorry, but it was not clear from your obscure remark that you were even addressing me. And I usually don't take too much notice of one troll/Daves persona's comments as opposed to another's. Especially from years ago, and when the game's up.

Yes Sasha, so vague that you immediately remembered upon reading it. Ironic isn't it, that someone who uses a book by probably one of the most famous chess grandmasters, doesn't play chess himself ( it is he right?)? I think if you did play chess at any level above novice, you would know that comparing business skills to chess skills is a poor analogy at best (this is considering Gary Kasparov's success in business).

As to gaijin always references, I think I have pointed out before;

a) I know him offline
b) We both work at one university together

There were similar 'rumors' afoot that a few posters coupled with you were one and the same person. 'Oddly' enough, we concluded that a few posters simply had similar views.

You are correct, though teaching logic is not normally one of our prime directives in ESL/EFL.

We are very lucky that that is so, given the propensity for many EFLers to make baseless assumptions, hold strong opinions based on scant evidence, and to unwittingly ascribe failings to others that they are guilty of themselves.

Please wish GA well for me, and for my collective.

Is it also our duty to pint out the dangers of believing imperialist propaganda about the American Space Programme and the fake Moon Landings ? Not to mention the dangers of fluoride in our drinking water and the need to wear aluminium foil helmets at all times ?

Well, I think most members of the US Republican party are highly qualified in this respect....

Delivering fear-ridden sound bites related to far-fetched theories and outdated cultural norms, and vigorously testing voters as to how far they then understand and agree with said theories.

Now, I'm going back undercover before they send assassins.
