A senior teacher at my school had a kidney stone and just assumed our school plan would cover everything. Wrong. It has a cap of 50,000 yuan, and I am told most all the free med plans for teachers only cover the first 50,000. They gouged Leo for 86,000 yuan and put him in a VIP suite he never even asked for. They claim it was the only bed available. Yeah right! What should 2 days in a China hospital for a kidney stone cost anyway?

I had a hernia repaired, spent 3 nights in a private room and was billed 15,000rmb and reimbursed 13,000rmb.

86,000rmb for a stone???? I knew another teacher who had her gallbladder removed. 10k, fully reimbursed.

My GF's father went in to have a kidney busted up with an ultra sonic machine and he was in and out of the public hospital the same day and his bill was 7,040 yuan. It was Haidian Hospital. I think your friend got ripped OP.

From what I understand, it doesn't matter which medical plan you have in China because the maximum coverage is 50,000 rmb which if you have a car accident will cover the ambulance ride, the ER work/test and maybe one night in the hospital. If you go in for anything major that requires biopsies, surgery, or extensive testing you had better have another 50,000 rmb of cash available. Just giving birth is a 40,000 bill.
