Most laptops these days have power convertors built into them so they can adapt to international travel and use. Unless your system is quite old, it shouldn't be an issue. Check your manual or the place where you got it to be sure. In any case, though, the power difference between Japan and North America isn't very significant - 100 volts vs. 110, with a lower hertz rating in the eastern parts (Tokyo, etc.).

Has anyone brought anything to Japan from Northern America and had it not work due to this difference in power output?

We're talking laptop here so that means the answer to that question is 'not at all'

Plus NA and Japanese power is the same (isn't it?).

No it isn't, but very close. Look at the poster 2 ahead of yours.

Everything we brought to Japan has worked fine, just a little slower. The blender and coffee grinder just take a little longer. The other direction might prove to be more of a problem, it might blow a fuse, but I'm just guessing on that.

My girlfriend has a hair dryer from Japan that is still going after two years use here in Canada, however, this thing gets quite hot if you run it too long.

Synne, you'll be fine bringing electrical stuff to Japan. Don't bring a radio though, different frequency.
