It's harder in Asia. Some places won't get you a visa if you're over 50, 55, 60 etc

Many schools in Asia won't even consider someone over 50, and that applies esp. to the chain schools which are more likely to hire someone with just a BA & TEFL but no exp. teaching EFL.

I have an American friend, he's just over 50, with a BA & CELTA & 5 years teaching EFL, he finds that many schools won't even consider him because of his age, despite his quals...

AT 60 years of age it's probably best to teach English online in Latin America....and be a freelance teacher working for yourself. Otherwise opening your own language school in a country of choice (Getting married to a local would be helpful with legal visa/work related/residency issues etc) . Good luck! Smile

Happy to help if you have questions about Ecuador. Age isn't much of a barrier here (I know several teachers who are older than you). Adults only will be more difficult, though there are a a couple of places that mostly specialise in business English.

HLJHLJ (or just_a_mirage,) do you happen to know whether a retirement visa allows the visa holder to work under current law? A few years ago I was trying to compile a list of countries where a retirement visa permitted working, and, as I recall, at that time Ecuador did not allow retirees to legally work. But I am curious to know what the current visa law allows.

Yes it does allow you to work. The law hasn't changed but the interpretation of it has.
