As far as deodorants go, most brands here are two or three times as expensive here as in the US. Make a Costco or WalMart run and buy enough to hold you through your next visit, unless you fancy having someone pay a pretty penny to ship it. |

yeah, back in the summer of 2012, I was in Osaka and I could deff tell that people didn't use pit stick or that it was very weak. being underground for the subway killed the nose. I will stock up on some old spice before I go. great advice everyone!
I can tell from a lot of the posts that my next question may or may not be applicable as I am still in my late 20s, I play video games on my off time to relieve stress (I don't smoke or drink much) and thought about bringing my xbox one over to Japan. waste of space or not bad idea? |

Bring the XBox! You may be stuck in inaka. Also, read about region codes before you come (though you are probably aware of it already). |

Sell it, and buy a lightweight Nintendo DS? Or how about an English--Japanese electronic dictionary? |

Trust me, you will have some free time no matter where you are placed. You can only study and retain so much each day. |

By the way, if you have an XBox you'll need a TV too, won't you? Are you aware that there's a tax on TV sets? |

Actually, more than one "hidden" cost. Not sure if it's classified as a tax, but there's the disposal reclamation fee, paid in advance, in addition to sales tax. There's also the NHK fee. Some say it's voluntary, but my rental contract stipulates payment and I needed to sign up for automated withdrawals before getting the key to the house. |

Not any more.
In principle, the law requires all television set owners to pay up, but the law had no teeth; there was no penalty for violation. So long as you were careful not to sign anything, the NHK collection agents couldn't touch you.
But a court decision in 2013 changed all that. Now NHK can sue you.

Yes. An annual fee paid to NHK, the national public service broadcaster. |

well, besides the point, I remember checking out youtube and people showed their aeon apartments and gaming on the tiny TVs wouldn't be much gaming. I could just buy a nicer laptop if I needed that gaming fix.
From what people tell me, I should bring good pit stick, some decent clothes tha fit and SHOES (im chubby wiuth wide feet so yeah deff those)
also I plan to unlock my samsung galaxy s5 active to use in Japan so I don't have to buy a new phone, anyone know if a smart phone is going to be super expensive? |

Bring painkillers. You ever get an injury or the flu, you don't want to pay 1000yen for 1000mg of Advil. It is silly here. Pain killer doses are baby sized, and priced like cocaine. |

That's because the Japanese think pain is honorable and right. |
