Yes, many places hire teachers part-time. However, they won't sponsor a work visa for part-time employees.
If you can get a working holiday visa, you can string together a few part-time jobs to create a full-time schedule for yourself.
If you are not currently in Japan with a work visa, you will need to get a full-time job first. Then, after that job, you can apply for a 'self-sponsored' visa based on part-time jobs. |

Most importantly, when stringing together PT jobs, don't just aim to fill your schedule, but work to get paid the most for the time you put in. Some PT uni guys make about the same and sometimes more than the FT (minus many benefits). |

Yes, some part timers are pulling in 1 million per month 12 months of the year. Some full timers are making half that or even less. Just depends on how much you wish to work. |

It was suggested that I string together a bunch of part time jobs by other Japanese, but seems they don't realize that legally, I can't do that. I need a sponsor in order to work here. I'm not under the age of 30 nor am I from the UK where I can just apply for a WHV.
Anyway, they do have many part-time jobs here. I've come across a fair share of them. |

After you are in Japan on a normal work visa, you can renew it as a 'self-sponsored' visa based on multiple part-time jobs (see here: http://www.nic-nagoya.or.jp/en/e/archives/8318 ). |

the self-sponsored visa does not exist. I got one when I was a part-time uni teacher working at a few places, but it wasn't called self-sponsored. |

Right, that's why I put it in 'scare quotes'. It's not officially called a self-sponsored visa, but that's what everyone calls it. The first sentences of the link that I posted says:
Quote: |
As far as immigration is concerned there is no such thing as a self-sponsored visa in Japan. “Self sponsorship” is not an official term, a “DIY visa” is probably closer to the truth.
Instead of relying on a single business or school to fill out forms and sponsor your visa, “self sponsorship” means that you have a part-time job supplemented by one or more part-time positions or private contracts that enable you to make a living. |

yes, sorry,
the self sponsored visa as we call it is very easy to transfer to, not get. You will need to get sponsored via an eikaiwa or ALT position, quit, find some part-time jobs and when your visa runs out transfer. |
