Okinawa, sure.
One JTE I know is retired in Malaysia.
Down there, you need shots to avoid any of the diseases. |

I have a Japanese wife, too. I just said to her a while ago when she was my girlfriend, I am retiring in southern Europe. Basically as the major bread winner, I feel I should have a say in where I retire. I may even leave Japan in a year or so for somewhere else as after 15 years in Japan I have realized it is full-time limited 5 year uni contracts and that's as good as it gets. |

I am making my exit plan too.
I will be on another 5 year contract.
It is time to plan my future, and time for a stable job where I can settle and buy a house. |

What is your exit plan? Do you mean leaving academia or just a different part of the world? Full time university pays ok, just if you have children I can imagine it would be pretty difficult to save money. Luckily we get yearly raises, but then after 5 years we have to move to a different part of Japan. It is quite difficult to find full-time positions in the greater Tokyo area, I find. The salary would be fine if they didn't take out all the deductions for health and pension, it is really annoying. It reminds me of the episode in Breaking Bad when the money is put on the table then, bit after bit is taken away for this and that. Season 5 episode 4, I watched it last night. |

Go back to the US and teach at a high school or university.
I am working on certification.
No kids so I will be able to teach in the US.
My wife has health problems and is burned out by teaching so it is time for a change. She has knee pain which doctors cannot cure.
I need a stable job if she just works part-time.
She is tired of moving in Japan. We are on our third address. |

University in US will be tough, even with a PhD it will be extremely difficult.
Isn't your university paying you well? Some do pay well, my only problem is if I have children, I don't want them to become Japanese, haha. |

Good for you if you can retire to a nice place. Which is why I am still doing a lot of investing in dollars.
Yeah, I couldn't up and move regions every five years. Being a professor just doesn't seem worth it to me. |
