I hate smoking, but something about the cheap Chinese cigarettes makes me all nostalgic and sentimental about China. Indonesia has the same with those cheap clove cigarettes that are killing people faster than malaria. Just one whiff of the things wherever you are and you're instantly transported back to some seedy bus terminal in Lanzhou with memories of a floor covered in seed husks, spit gobs and baby piss, 1,000 bumpkins staring at you all slack-jawed and nose picking.
In lieu of a pack of 1rmb smokes the reek from a filthy mainland Chinese bog has the same effect. Quite often I've been known to just stand in the Gents room, glance down into that steaming, dark pit from hell and wipe a tear from my eye.
Back in the days those two odors - the bogs and the fags were the only thing you could smell anywhere in the country. Smell a rose, smells like smoke. Freshly steaming baozi = ahh....freshly steaming latrine.
I've often wondered why an entrepreneuring Chinese businessman hasn't thought to make either of those aromas into a cologne (and/or police pepper spray). Eau de Mainland. |

Except when you need a stall for its intended purpose and they are all occupied by smokers.
I worked in a building in Shanghai that was officially non-smoking, but that didn't stop people from smoking in the bathrooms or the stairwells, where cans would be left as makeshift community ashtrays. The building's security guards not only didn't object, I believe they participated as well.
This wasn't in the winter either. No excuse not to step outside for a cigarette other than pure laziness. |

You haven't been to Vegas lately. There's no escaping the smoke in the casinos. Fremont Street casinos seems to have the least smoke. It might be that casino doors stay open.
I recall the Ministry of Health decreeing a ban in medical, government, and administrative offices about five or six years ago. I took a trip to a hospital a while ago, and I saw a few doctors standing next to a window blowing smoke out of a window. When treating smoke-related illnesses take a toll on the economy, smoking will be banned.

The US economy depends on smoking and the related illness as well as the related deaths. If people stopped smoking it would be devastating to economics of universities, insurances programs, retirements as well as the ACS. |

Not true! Smoking rates in the US are down and profits in the tobacco industry are up!

as I said, investments made by universities and other companies not to mention the additional payouts from retirement programs would cause economic consequences as well as the rising sin taxes attached. Penn which has research-heavy medical, nursing and public health schools in 2014 still invests a slice of its $7.7 billion endowment in tobacco companies.
If you follow the money generated by the sale of products and the reduced anticipated payouts due to smoking related illness, the additional revenues of sin taxes as well as the number of jobs attached to treating cancer and the revenue created by the patients death not to mention the money generated by the research system lead by The American Cancer society, perhaps it will enlighten more than a comedy skit will.

Smoking is a vile, repugnant habit. That's plain and simple. Anyone who smokes is a moron in my book. However, it's your body, and you can do as you please.
The posters who complain about the smoking in areas where it is strictly forbidden need to understand that this is China. Chinese people have no idea how to obey rules of any kind. Just watch them drive.
Speaking of Chinese drivers, I was asked by a Chinese colleague about whether or not she would be able to rent a car when she journeys to SF and LA later this year. I did some research and found out that some car rental agencies in New York (my hometown) will not rent to Chinese drivers even if they have an international driver's license. Good for them. |
