|
|
Hello everyone,
I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I am currently working as an ESL instructor at one of the TVTC colleges in Al Wajh, Saudi Arabia. I currently make 16,000 a month and my company is Mondragon/Wintech.
My company is making new contracts for teachers for August and I feel I should get a small increase in salary for renewing. I went to a TVTC workshop in Jeddah two weeks ago and heard through other colleges that a raise in salary is typical and it should be 3-5 percent.
My company is crying poor and want to be on survival mode which I think is a lot of BS. We have 279 students and are guaranteed COE funding for at least 200. In addition, they take our passports and renew my 30 day visas at immigration rather then send us to Dubai.
I am not criticizing my college but they are making money.
My question is: Am I being unreasonable and do most ESL jobs have a pay increase for your second year?
Thank you for reading,
Murray |

Not all employment contracts get renewed with an increase in salary. In other words, it's not a given for expats returning on a subsequent new, second-year contract. (Obviously, visit visa holders don't have valid employment contracts.)
Anyway, as I recall in your situation, your sponsor requires returning teachers to do so on proper employment visas rather than continuing on business visit visas. I suspect the company is figuring out the total costs affiliated with that process, and it ain't cheap. Besides, contracting companies are businesses that make their money from those who work at their various client sites, so they want to protect their financial interests. Of course, you could always ask the company if returning as a bona fide legal employee equates to more money. |

Thank you for answering Nomad,
Yes we are switching to Igamas. They are raising our hours from 22 to 25 and our class sizes are rising.
I am surprised that there is no guarantee of a raise to retain teachers. I was under the assumption that companies would want to keep their teachers and not have to rehire and retrain new teachers.
Thanks again for the input! |

Contracting companies seem to always be hiring because of high turnover whether they actually train the teachers or not. Besides, most companies require teachers to already have a few years of relevant classroom experience rather than wasting valuable time to train them on how to teach. They're more interested in getting teachers into the classrooms as soon as possible and quickly earning money for the business. |

you may be under the false impression that it is cheaper for them to do this. Teachers who are there longer tend to make demands such as, ahem, salary increases. Those who are just off the plane do not.
Also, and don't take this personally, minimal or non-existent pay rises are often used to send messages to teachers who management no longer want to retain so that they don't renew. |

In most cases they are informed in a polite manner, saves money and time. |

It's a worth a try, there's no harm in asking. If they refuse, bear in mind that 16,000 SR base is a decent sum. |

I always say.. if you don't ask, you don't get. Just ask! And if you don't get it, then that's cool, 'cause to be honest, I think your base salary is a good one compared to most unis and schools out here. |
