With all due respect to our veteran posters, Kazakhstan is usually considered part of Central Asia.

We've had decent writing scores come back, just not on this particular exam cycle.

I still feel like it is a rater issue but nonetheless, we are reflecting on what happened with an eye towards adjusting instruction.

If you all feel it is a rater issue, you can ask for a re-mark if you are certain the test-takers didn't mess up on the day. However, if their other papers were much higher, like you have described, then the test centre itself may have already re-rated them. 'Jagged profiles' usually attract this.

Bear in mind, if the re-check gives the same result, then it has to be paid for. If a higher band is awarded, then there is no extra charge...

1.Kazakhs don't write enough: "pay attention to the number of words required for each task; you will lose marks if you do not write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2"
2.Kazakhs use the rubric: "do not copy whole sentences from the question – you will receive no marks for this."
3.Kazakhs don't answer the question. "keep to the topic; do not write about unrelated subjects"
4.Kazakhs use colloquial language. They write like they speak. "avoid informal language"
