I just applied for a position there.

But have you read that they're slowly going to start phasing out foundation programs in the UAE 2018? What do you think about that?

That is only the government universities, not private institutions. Supposedly the students are going to learn their English in the K-12 classes. But, if history is any evidence, there will still be thousands of students whose English will be nowhere close to being able to study in the language.

Private universities and colleges will likely still have their own foundations programs. There will still have to be some system to bring students up to level at the government institutions... how and where are still the questions. It could be private language schools... or if there are still huge numbers, it may end up back under HCT. But, either way I suspect that pay and benefits will suffer in these changes.

That is, after all, the goal here... cutting costs.

For all those who are asking about getting positions in the UAE with online credentials and less than the minimum stated requirements in a job posting, you should take VS's statement to heart. That is the reality of teaching English at present in the UAE: more hours, more students, less pay, less vacation, and NO questions asked. It's an easy enough equation to follow.

If you recall, they tried to transfer it all to HCT a few years back... in a totally botched last-minute disaster. At the end of the academic year they decided to do it... with no planned curriculum, space needs, staffing needs, desks, books, etc. Forced a number of UAEU teachers to transfer to HCT... and the students revolted... all ran to various daddies with wasta... and it got reversed. That taught them that they better plan it a bit better. Getting it into the schools is the natural answer, but it remains to be seen how it works. And it will be more problematic for the students far from the city lights of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

I suspect that the changeover will be gradual enough to spread out the costs of the many teachers who will bail out as the conditions deteriorate. Many, if not most, of the long time TEFLers have left with their funds in the last 2-3 years.

Thanks for all of your insights, guys. I actually applied to HCT the other day and very soon they sent me an e-mail stating that I wasn't a right fit for them. But I wonder what will happen to all of those students who still won't have English once the schools are phased out? Time will tell...
