Hello everyone, firstly I have spent the last week searching through old posts to look for the answer and I would like up to date info.
I am tossing and turning on deciding between which city to move to - had anyone lived in both and be able to give a comparison between the two. Which one is more liveable and exciting. Which place has more to offer.
I lived in Fuzhou and hated it. Lived in taipei and loved it, love HK too.
Thanks |

Hard to say. I've never lived in either one but have spent time in Guangzhou and a bit in Shenzhen. Both have their supporters and detractors. Both are huge so it would depend on where exactly you lived as far as enjoyment, I would think. I wouldn't sweat over this one though: they are about an hour apart by fast train and both have easy access to Hong Kong. Shenzhen is on the border but that doesn't mean it will be instantaneous travel from where your apartment is. Go for the better job and living situation package. |

Even though Shenzhen borders Hong Kong and they even share a subway station, SZ is still mainland China and the difference is profound when you cross from one to the other. Stores, public areas, and even restrooms are much more westernized in HK. But SZ isnt bad all things considered. As the other poster said, your experience can be quite different depending on which district of the city you live in. I've never been to Guangzhou, so can't compare that aspect. |

I live in GZ and have spent a lot of time in SZ. SZ is a new city that was nothing but farmland 25 years ago. It is new and a HK wannabe, but certainly not HK. There is no cultural history at all and I find it quite sterile and boring in this respect. GZ is an ancient city with A LOT more to explore, and has a lot of charm when you get outside the tourist shopping areas- I love wandering the old tree-lined neighborhoods.
SZ has super easy access to HK, in its favor. GZ is an hour away by high speed train.
I prefer GZ and think SZ doesnt have anything GZ doesnt have, while the opposite cant be said. At the same time, I have friends in SZ who really like living there. |
