Yeah I watch John....
perhaps it will enlighten more than a comedy skit will.

a punch line is a punch line... and it doesn't make it true or false, however, those who seek to prove a position from information gleamed from a comedy skit often find the jokes on them.

| I live in Wuhan. I figure second-hand smoke doesn't damage my lungs any more so than breathing in the heavily polluted air. |

Tobacco smoke just damages your lungs in a different way. So you're adding insult to injury if you smoke or are subject to excessive secondhand smoke. |

They smoke everywhere, when you are walking behind them in the street, in the table next to yours at the restaurant and sometimes even in the elevator. In the restaurant and the elevator they will not stop even if you ask them too. Since I am a pretty health conscious person it is appalling to me to see this many people smoking! I just can't get used to this at all. |
I have ZERO hesitation to rip or slap things out of their hands in confined spaces such as buses or in hospitals or restaurants just go up an slap it away and yell in English that they are stupid for poisoning me .... in school I carry around a can of air freshener in a spray bottle and go right after those in the fact standing outside my door while I'm in class. Change only happens when people force it to happen. Find unique ways as I did to express your disgust. Don't take it. "Culture" claims are sad and nothing to do with my health |

I guarantee you that you are lying about this because you would get your ass kicked rather quickly if it were true.
Next time you're going to make stuff up at least make it believable. |

Or you could just politely make a coughing sound, point to their cigarette, and most Chinese are polite enough to stop. No need to be an Internet Tough Guy. |

Smoking in hotels can be awful. Often it gets pumped through the air-conditioning vents, as if they are trying to share the love around.
Last weekend I went to Shenzhen and stayed in a pretty decent hotel. When I booked I stated I must have a non-smoking floor. When I got to the counter upon arrival I repeated my request, saying how important it was. When I got to my room on the 17th floor the room beside me had the door open. There were four Chinese guys in there chain smoking, filling the corridor with toxic fumes - while yelling at each other in that Chinese way we Zhongguo old timers have come to love and enjoy.
Just up the corridor another door was open, smoke and megaphone-voices pouring out. I opened my room door to find an ashtray on the table.
And yeah, I requested a move.
I find it hard to believe some people actually think it wrong to ask people who are doing something offensive to desist. If you ask firmly but politely, people always apologise and comply. A couple of days ago I was in Starbucks having a coffee while writing something up on my computer. A middle aged Chinese guy rumbled in and sat down opposite me, pulled out his mobile and proceeded to yell at the thing at the top of his voice. I was annoyed but got absorbed in my work. It must have been twenty minutes later when I was finally compelled to walk over and tap him on the shoulder and ask him to turn down the volume. He said sorry, I said thank you; and he did indeed turn it right down. He stayed there for another twenty minutes, talking on his phone, before leaving. He never ordered a coffee. Guess he was just enjoying the air conditioning. |
