Thanks for the link madrileno. That's great news. It might take a while for things to get established, but, hopefully, there will soon be more direct international flights in and out of Salalah . |

I remember my long bus rides from Muscat to Salalah and back again. One way was about 12 hours, I believe. It's good this new airport is going in. Is the new airport in Muscat done yet, or is it still being built? |

It's still being built. I don't expect it will be opening before 2018... |

Maybe. They didn't pay the (British) contractor for the work that had been done to build the fuel reservoir so they downed tools. The rain earlier in the year flooded the initial work that had been done and so it needs starting from scratch. Last I heard nobody was offering at the price they now want to pay and the initial contractor is refusing to return unless the outstanding debt is paid in full first. |

There's construction projects all over the Sultanate left in similar limbo. Here in Salalah, there's a giant unfinished mosque that's been sitting unchanged, without any progress apparently for the past five years. Rumor has it the head contractor skipped out with all the funds...
Also, there are the building sites that experience a flurry of activity for two months a year, and then mysteriously sit vacant for the other ten. Sometimes they never get worked on again. They just sit empty and fall derelict.
It's one thing when this happens to projects run by private enterprises, but it's a serious problem if it concerns major infrastructure projects like an international airport! |
